Big Things I take for Granted
My son and his family surprised us and came to visit us for the holidays from Arizona. He has a two-year-old son and a 6-month-old daughter. My grandson's favorite thing that he pays attention to the most, is his local garbage man and truck. So on the day before Christmas, my grandson and I watched videos on YouTube of garbage trucks of all shapes, sizes, and colors collecting the trash down various streets in the nation. As I was laying down on the couch he laid on my side and we watched all of these garbage trucks for a half hour. When the garbage truck comes to his street, he runs out to watch how the garbage can is picked up and the trash is deposited into the truck. He then waves to the garbage worker and then goes over and talks to him if there is time. It is the highlight of his week.
As I watched all of the garbage trucks picking up garbage, it made me think of how important and essential is for our health and our clean streets and our picked-up houses that the garbage is collected each week. The garbage man at my son's home told him that because COVID-19 is affecting so many of his company's employees, that he was working 60 hours a week to cover for other employee's shifts.
What if we did not have anyone picking up the garbage? What if we had trash that was piling up on the streets? What if we had rats and mice running through the garbage in our neighborhoods? What if we had to collect all of the garbage ourselves and make visits often to the local dump using our own cars? I carried this thought forward to our public works department plowing the snow off of our streets each time it snows and doing it often during the storms and in the middle of the night. I thought about all of the salt put down on our streets to make sure our cars have traction to drive on to work, to school, to the grocery stores, etc.
I also thought about the other public works people that keep our water running, our sewers working, our stormwater drains functioning, our roads paved, and our potholes fixed. I thought about the fact that as a resident I take all of this for granted and don't fully think about how important these services are for the enjoyment of our homes and neighborhoods.
So when you see one of our public works employees helping to keep our city clean and running properly, please be thankful, and if possible, go out and tell them thanks for all they do for our city, like my grandson Jake does.

Message from Councilmember Tom Macdonald

I imagine that many of us are excited to turn the page on 2020. This has been a year of significant health and economic challenges for so many. We praise our health care workers, first responders, and all of you who have sojourned on, despite life not being normal. I have found peace during these times as I hope and pray and work for a brighter tomorrow. We can learn much from others who have come through challenges victoriously. One of them is Nelson Mandela who said, “May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.”
We have many reasons to hope for a much brighter year in 2021. May you choose to see the good in, and be good to all of those around you.
