Conversations between Generations
Facilitator: Jackie Newns
Thursday, January 14, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Categorizing people by their generation can be useful in some ways, but it can also blind us to our common humanity. What do younger people really care about? Do older people have a dream for the future? Are “they” all alike? Join in a Spirit-infused evening of conversation about the “big picture” questions of life as well as pressing issues of our day.

To help enrich your personal relationships beyond this evening, please sign up with a friend or relative from another generation (ages 18+), so you can be partnered with them during the conversations. However, if you do not have a discussion partner from another generation, please feel comfortable registering; we’ll match you up.

P.S. This would make a great Christmas gift!
Deep River: African American Spirituality
Presenter: Boreta Singleton
Saturday, January 16, 2021, 9:30a-12:30pm

The spirituality of African Americans is rooted in Scripture, but also in the elements of literature, poetry and in the music of the Spirituals. This morning of prayer will invite you to explore the richness and depth of these elements as seen through the centuries of writings, poetry and commentaries on Spirituals by African Americans.
Examen + Mindfulness Leads to Gratitude + Growth
Wednesday, January 20, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Mindfulness is a spiritual buzzword these days, as many seek focus and inner peace in the midst of the pandemic and great social unrest. Time out for centering ourselves and bringing a greater awareness to our lives can be a boon. Apps abound!

What if we invited God into our practice of mindfulness? Christians have been doing this for centuries. Dig into one method for mindfulness, the Examen, which Ignatius of Loyola recommended and which millions still practice today. See how God can connect with you there and broaden your life with gratitude and growth. Come through this tumultuous time closer to God.
The Science of Evolution: Teilhard’s Pathway to God
Presenter: Kathleen Duffy, SSJ
Saturday, January 30, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Although some people continue to find science and religion irreconcilable and others fail to any connection between the two, Jesuit paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin would disagree. After some years of struggle, he found that the science of evolution actually enhanced his incarnational theology and supported his mysticism. During the morning session, we will explore aspects of Teilhard’s synthesis of evolution and incarnation. In the afternoon, we will consider how this synthesis nourished his already profoundly mystical spirit.
