Americorps: Restorative Power of Collective Labor
|
As most of you are aware, being the dedicated IAE blog readers you are, restoration work at IAE is deeply entwined with community volunteers and collaborative labor. Coordinated volunteer efforts are a great help to our projects and have immediate effects on the rehabilitation of a landscape. This fall, IAE hosted an AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) volunteer team: Red 8. Red 8 was scheduled to volunteer with us on a dozen different worksites over the course of eight weeks, but as is the case with most restoration work, things change on the fly. Read More

Native Seed Partnerships: Five Things to Know
|
We caught up with the ecologists hosting the 2022 Virtual Native Seed Partnerships Conference in January, and they collectively answered our questions about seed partnerships.
Why do we have seed partnerships?
Successful habitat restoration depends, in part, on an adequate supply of native plant materials. Planting a diversity of native species provides ecosystem services for pollinators, wildlife, and people, as well as increasing ecosystem resilience in the face of climate change and invasive species. Lack of quantity and quality of native plant materials, both seeds and nursery stock, has significantly hindered landscape recovery efforts. Read More

New Ecologist Moves the Dial for Ecosystems
|
January 2021 saw me packing up my home along the US/Mexico border and trekking 22 hours across the country to land in Corvallis, Oregon. I was chasing down a dream that I’d held close for years: to conserve and restore the ecosystems that had stolen my heart as a child visiting the Oregon coast. The Institute for Applied Ecology, with its mission to conserve native species and habitats through restoration, research and education, made my dream come true. I was officially a Research Ecologist with IAE. Now, a year later, it only feels natural to slow down and reflect on the incredible year I’ve had with this organization. Read More

The fall and winter are still busy for the farm. 2021 seed has all been cleaned, inventoried, mixed and given to the Habitat Restoration Department to sow back into project sites. All annual crops and cover crops have been seeded and are germinating. By January 15th, we will have more than 45,000 plugs in production both for starting increase fields and planting directly into project sites. Feels like spring is just around the bend!

Fall/winter is a good time for shrub work. IAE staff James Mc Auliffe, Rolando Beorchia and Julia Fields are pictured after a day helping reduce tree and shrub encroachment at a mid-elevation meadow near McGuire Reservoir, northwest of McMinnville. This meadow is home to the largest population of threatened Nelson's checkermallow in the Coast Range. The work is funded by Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and landowners are BLM and McMinnville Water and Light.
