Congratulations to President Artis on her election to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on College Board of Trustees. Dr. Artis’ three-year term will begin in June 2022. The SACSCOC is the body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the southern states.

The Benedict College Women’s Business Center (BC WBC) and Nexsen Pruet Law Firm are proud to announce their strategic partnership to support minority women-owned businesses in South Carolina. This is the first state-wide collaboration between a federally designated Women’s Business Center and a private law firm in South Carolina. The partnership will provide an opportunity for BC WBC clients to receive free legal services as they venture down the path of starting, growing, or expanding their businesses.
Like other Women Business Centers across the country, the BC WBC serves as a key component to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s efforts to expand the services provided to our small businesses by focusing on resiliency and recovery strategies that foster business survival and sustainability in response to COVID-19.
Access to affordable legal services continues to serve as a barrier to many of our small businesses, especially our minority women-owned businesses. Working in collaboration with Nexsen Pruet, the BC WBC will elevate the support provided to their clients by adding the provision of legal webinars and other pro bono legal services to the Center’s extensive services already provided to its clients. This alignment with Nexsen Pruet further solidifies equal opportunities for growth and development in underserved communities throughout our state.

Benedict College Gets Ready for the
2022 Home Depot Retool Your School Campaign

Beginning Monday, February 28, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. Benedict College students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends have an opportunity to help BC win up to $75,000 to upgrade the campus through the 2022 Home Depot Retool Your School (RYS) campaign. Since, 2009, the Home Depot RYS campaign has provided over $4.1 million in campus improvement grants to HBCUs.
The voting period will be from Monday, February 28th through Sunday, March 27th. Look out for more information about Countdown to the BC RYS Campaign and Official Kick-of Party in the coming weeks. If you are interested in becoming a part of the BC RYS Team, please contact [email protected].

Congratulations Tayania Brewer |

|
Congratulations to Tayania Brewer on her new internship at Infinity Math Preschool. The Hartville native was recently selected to teach music at the popular school located in northeast Columbia, SC. Brewer is majoring in Music and minoring in Education. She currently maintains a 4.0-grade point average and is a two-time President's Trophy recipient. When she is not teaching the little ones or working hard in the classroom, you can find her playing the alto saxophone as a section leader with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Bound-Benedict College Marching Band of Distinction. Brewer is also a traveling musician who is scheduled to graduate in May 2023 and pursue a Master of Arts in Education. |

Kudos to Dr. Tracy Dunn (pictured left), Dean of the Tyrone Adam Burroughs School of Business and Entrepreneurship, for writing and submitting the Relentless Challenge Grant sponsored by the Office of Innovation at the SC Department of Commerce.
The Burroughs Enterprise, Startup, and Technology (B.E.S.T.) Innovation Lab will serve as a mind-shift initiative for Benedict students. The Innovation Lab is designed to bring awareness of high-growth entrepreneurship to potential entrepreneurs.
"The Business School is looking forward to leading this inclusive initiative that will contribute to building a culture of innovation initiative that will contribute to building a culture of innovation on or campus," noted Dr. Dunn.
The program will develop a framework through which the utilization of seminars, team projects, newly formed Founders Lecture Series, and the cross-pollination of disciplines will create a robust culture of innovation and high-growth student entrepreneurship. The B.E.S.T. Innovation Lab is for all BC students.

Tigers Cruise Over Edward Waters for 10th Straight Win |

The Benedict College Tigers placed six players in double figures and scored a season-high 111 points as they cruised over Edward Waters 111-68 for their 10th straight victory on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.

Ay'Anna Bey scored 25 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to help lead the Benedict College Lady Tigers to a 73-65 victory over Edward Waters University on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The 25 points were her second-highest of the season, and the 18 rebounds was also her second-best of the season with her fourth double-double of the season. The fifth-year senior also has now surpassed 2,000 career points.
Keondra Archie added 18 points and Camryn Bostick chipped in 10 points for the Lady Tigers, who improve to 11-5 on the season. Edward Waters, now 11-6, was led by 22 points from La'Quanza Glover.

Benedict senior forward Ay’Anna Bey has been a force for the Tigers since she stepped on the court for the team.
This season, Bey has averaged 15.7 points per game, 8.6 rebounds, and 1.6 steals. In her last game against Edward Waters, she tallied 25 points, 18 rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
However, her best overall game may have been against Central State when she had 14 points, 19 rebounds, four assists, four steals, and five blocks.
In 112 career games, Bey is averaging 18.1 points per game and 9.6 rebounds. Her best season came in 2018-2019 when she put up 23.7 points and 12.5 rebounds.
Her signature performance came against Clark Atlanta in the penultimate game of the season scoring a career-high 44 points on a super-efficient 21-of-23 shooting from the field adding 17 rebounds and two blocks.

South Carolina Remembers Legendary Coach George Glymph |

Legendary basketball Coach George E. Glymph was born December 22, 1942 in Union County, South Carolina. His family moved to Columbia when George was the age of three. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1961. He then attended Benedict College, graduating in 1965.

Dr. Brandon J. Wright, Class of 2012, has been named interim assistant dean of student success for the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie. Wright, who is passionate about student achievement, joined USC Salkehatchie in 2021 as director of student success and engagement. His new position allows him to expand on his vision of creating student environments that provide multiple opportunities for students to realize their goals of obtaining a college education. |

Starbucks opens its 20th Community Store with historic artwork and photography celebrating Benedict College and the Waverly community |

Starbucks recently opened one of its Community Stores at 2509 Forest Drive, the first one located in the Carolinas. The new store is located in the former location of King’s Pizza.
You may ask, what is a Community Store? Call it a mixture of coffee and community engagement. Launched in 2015, the Community Store Initiative is part of an overall commitment by Starbucks to focus on providing more opportunities for underserved populations around the country. It’s a Starbucks cafe that also directly benefits the community through education, workforce development, and job creation.
In an effort to connect with the local community, the cafe features original artwork and historic photos of Benedict College and the Allen University communities. One picture on the wall prominently shows the Benedict College baseball team in an old black and white photo among other historical photos of the College.
The first Community Store was opened in 2016 in Ferguson, Mo., and 14 others are now operating in locations around the country, including Queens and Brooklyn in New York City, Englewood on the South Side of Chicago, Phoenix, and Long Beach, Calif. In the Southeast, there are Community Stores in Jonesboro, Ga., New Orleans, Birmingham, Ala., and Miami Gardens, Fla. In early 2020, the company estimated that the Community Stores had contributed to the creation of 300 local jobs and generated $59.7 million in indirect economic development in their communities.
Starbucks has committed to opening 100 community stores nationwide by 2025, with a mix of new sites and renovation of existing buildings. Starbucks representatives were looking for a high-traffic area that also was in need of economic development when they came calling in the Midlands, according to Jude Peck of Forest Drive 2020 LLC, who is project manager for the new Forest Drive site.
“We’re excited to be involved with the project because of the company’s concern about helping the community,” Peck said. “The demographics of the Forest Drive area supported the goals of the Community Store project, plus it’s in an area with a lot of traffic and a lot of growth potential. The area has the benefit of nearby college campuses, Providence Hospital nearby, and other construction projects ongoing in the area. The confluence of all that made it a good potential site for one of these stores.”
The Community Stores have several distinct features that are different than standard Starbucks cafes. Besides the usual serving and seating areas, they feature a designated room for community events. The space on Forest Drive will be able to host workforce training classes, job fairs, community workshops, educational programs, and other events.
