PRESIDENT'S NOTES
The Benefits of Membership- Our Members Speak

Each month, we show a chart with the advantages that companies receive from being a member in World Trade Center Delaware. This month, we decided to let two members from very different industries tell you why they joined, and why they continue to be members.

Arkion®Life Sciences: is a New Castle based company that discovers, develops, manufactures and markets environmentally friendly products and technology that are used in the agriculture industry. A few years ago, we spoke with Ken Ballinger, Vice President, about the benefits that Arkion’s products would bring to farmers in other countries, specifically those in Africa. We encouraged the company to accompany us to the US-African Business Summit, the continent’s most important venue for linking companies, governments, and nongovernment organizations from all of Africa with those in the United States. We have worked closely with Arkion since then, identifying and linking the company to a number of countries. Ken Ballinger stated that “this is not going to be an insignificant business”. He said that WTC Delaware “deserves all the credit for getting us in a position to look at Africa.”

The Port of Wilmington is the linchpin of Delaware’s international logistics industry. Owned by the State of Delaware, it has been operated by GT USA Wilmington, part of Gulftainer, the world’s largest private port operator since 2018. The Port and World Trade Center Delaware have worked closely together for many years and a member of the executive team at the Port sits on our Board of Directors. Kathryn Bradley, Director of Government Affairs and Corporate Communications at GT USA Wilmington, described the benefits of membership as: “WTC Delaware doesn’t just bring us companies interested in doing business with Delaware and the Port, it brings us entire countries”.

INTERNATIONAL DELAWARE
Welcome to the 5th edition of International Delaware® the yearly magazine of World Trade Center Delaware

This year’s magazine focuses on Delaware’s science and technology sector, the “most international of all professions” as true as when President John F. Kennedy said this almost 50 years ago. Scientists and engineers come from all over the world to develop and deliver products and services used on earth, the moon, and beyond. The diversity of opportunity and talent create a fertile ground for companies seeking to create new products and services for the world’s markets.

Delaware companies, academic institutions and non-government organizations have worked tirelessly to ameliorate the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic, other diseases and the effects of climate change. Many smaller companies have been at the forefront of developing solutions to these, our most critical challenges. One of COVID’s greatest unintended consequences was the chaos in supply chains caused by port closures and labor shortages in factories, ships and trucks, just when increased international e-Commerce required additional containers, port storage space and handling facilities. Here, too, Delaware has met the test.

Automation, information, communications, gene editing, optical, and other evolving technologies create the need for more highly skilled technologists. Innovative local programs ranging from coding to CRISPR are making this groundbreaking technology accessible around the world.

We wish to thank all the people who contributed to this edition of International Delaware -our sponsor Discover Bank, publishing partner Delaware Business Times, the World Trade Center Delaware Board of Directors, and all the companies whose support for this edition makes it possible for the world to understand why America’s Innovation Corridor is located in Delaware.

WTC Delaware Long-Term Member Stephanie L. Chapman, CPA Named Director

Stephanie L. Chapman, CPA was named a Shareholder of Belfint, Lyons & Shuman, P.A. (BLS) and Director in the International Services Practice Group, effective January 1, 2022, as voted on by the directors of the firm.

Stephanie celebrated her 12th anniversary at BLS in May 2021, having started as a Supervisor in the Tax & Small Business Department in 2009. She brought with her a number of years of experience at other public accounting firms in Florida, Pennsylvania, and Delaware, as well as a bachelor of arts in accounting and a master of accountancy, both from the University of West Florida.

Not long after joining the BLS family, Stephanie began to focus on building an international services practice that she, along with other BLS members, can proudly say represents 10% of the firm’s revenue. Stephanie’s motivation of expanding the international services practice group at BLS started with a passion for travel, a rapidly globalized business climate, and her love for helping clients navigate complex tax issues. It was the perfect itinerary for success. Along with assisting her clients and her team, Stephanie regularly performs educational events throughout the world and has been published in local and international publications. Stephanie is committed to strengthening her ability to assist clients and her community through her active role in PrimeGlobal’s international services special interest group, her participation in the AICPA International Tax Technical Resource Panel, and by earning an AICPA International Tax Certificate.

Stephanie states, “I love what I do! The world is becoming smaller every day, and I get to play a part in the adventure by helping people feel more confident in their decisions to expand across borders. I am forever grateful to BLS for allowing me to combine my passion of looking and traveling beyond the U.S. and my technical ability to understand complex compliance situations to strengthen the firm’s international services practice group.”

Stephanie is a member of the Wilmington Tax Group where she acts a President/Board Member, the AICPA, and the DSCPA, and is active with the World Trade Center Delaware. She resides in North Wilmington, Delaware with her family and their three adopted dogs from Delaware Humane Association.

“Stephanie has worked very hard throughout her career and truly deserves this recognition having proven her commitment to the firm and to our International Services area. She has been the driving force in building this successful practice and we are proud to have her become an owner of the firm.” – Michael T. French, CPA, Director.
