President's Message
Ann Grant
Hello! My name is Ann Grant and it is a privilege to be in your inbox, as I start my term as the 2023 President of AFP Chicago. Thank you for trusting me with this role.

Below is a snapshot of what we accomplished together in 2022 toward our mission of empowering individuals and organizations to practice ethical fundraising through professional education, networking, research, and advocacy. My hope is that these numbers encourage you as we start the new year. AFP Chicago:

  • Welcomed 184 new members into our community of fundraisers, which collectively serves 390 local nonprofits.
  • Presented 9 educational workshops on topics from board diversity and representation, to ethics in prospect development, to strategies for retaining crisis donors—with an average of 58 registrants and an attendee survey satisfaction score of 4.7 out of 5.
  • Continued our longstanding efforts to support early career and “new to development” professionals from diverse backgrounds through 18 peer mentoring matches and a class of 4 AFP Fellows.
  • Grew and strengthened our Affinity Groups, which offer opportunities to fundraisers to meet and form relationships with colleagues with similar backgrounds and identities—hosting 35 meetings, across 5 Affinity Groups, with 155 active members.
  • Deepened our commitment to IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Access), evident in our successful work to recruit speakers from underrepresented racial/ethnic populations (67% of all public program presenters), maintain a diverse board of directors (42% BIPOC), and issue honoraria (39 total) to our presenters and facilitators to help compensate them for their time and efforts to engage our community.

We all know that the purpose of philanthropy is to serve. The real magic in our work is the intersection of philanthropy and people. I have always believed that the heart of what we do is relationship building. With an investment of time and effort in AFP Chicago, I have been fortunate to have met new colleagues, peers, mentors, donors, and some lifelong friends. I challenge you to think about how YOU will lean into your network and programming hosted by AFP Chicago this year, to make Chicagoland a stronger nonprofit community, and, perhaps make a new friend. Meet a new colleague? The opportunities are endless!

Again, thank you. I, along with the AFP Chicago Board of Directors, look forward to continuing to build on the work of our Chapter leaders, volunteers, and donors, who make everything we do possible.

Happy New Year,
Ann Grant
2023 President, AFP Chicago

Call for Applications: Peer Mentoring Program
Jennifer Dettloff
What are the benefits of having a mentor?
By: Jennifer Dettloff, CFRE, Director, Alumni and Volunteer Engagement, UChicago Medicine & Biological Sciences Development

Are you an early-career fundraiser? Would you like to have a sounding board or someone you could confidentially reach out to with your questions? Have you wondered how to find a mentor?

The answer could be as simple as applying for AFP Chicago’s Peer Mentoring program. Participation is free for AFP Chicago members.

Each spring and fall, the Peer Mentoring Committee accepts applications from AFP Chicago members who have less than five years of experience. Protégés are asked to commit to a 12-month engagement in the program and are matched with a mentor who has at least five years of experience (but usually 10 to 15 years of experience or more). The Committee carefully curates these matches based on professional experience and the goals expressed in each protégé’s application.

Still wondering if Peer Mentoring is right for you? Here is how a mentor could help you:
  • An unbiased person to whom you can ask your work-related or career-related questions.
  • A connection point to help you expand your professional network.
  • A sounding board when you are working through a challenging situation.
  • An experienced fundraiser who can help you navigate the next steps in your career.

Peer Mentoring program participants are also invited to virtual quarterly discussion programs that feature small-group discussions of topics relevant to our work. Recent programs have featured engaging discussions around Managing Up and Career Steps in Development.

Take the next step in your career development. Apply for the Peer Mentoring Program today!

As a community of inclusion, the Association of Fundraising Professionals seeks, embraces, and engages diverse individuals, groups, and organizations with a broad representation of experiences, perspectives, thoughts and cultures within the fundraising profession. Through this strategic initiative, AFP is committed to activities that increase awareness of diversity issues. As part of this commitment, AFP Global and the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy have created a diversity scholarship program to provide financial assistance for the professional development of fundraisers who are themselves members of one or more diverse communities, or are employed by grassroots organizations that primarily serve diverse populations.
