CITY OF ATLANTA FIRE ACADEMY
Civic leaders experience what it takes to be on the front line
In February, AFRD is opening its doors to the Atlanta Fire Training Academy for the first time to civic leaders by inviting City of Atlanta’s Cabinet and its 16-member City Council. The half-day experience includes drills in CPR, ladder climb, rappelling, apparatus ‘show and tell’ of truck and engine, and a live fire demonstration.

"The city's leadership will experience the training regimen of public safety's front line," says Shirley Anne Smith, Executive Director, AFRF. "We are proud to fund this new initiative. AFRD is delivering a unique opportunity that ultimately benefits our community and its citizens."

UPDATE! Youth Pathways
This year's AFRD Cadet Program is in its third month of an eight-month cohort. There are 11 Cadets in the 2022-23 class. They are students from area high schools who have an interest in fire services. They commit to Saturdays at Atlanta Fire Rescue Station 16 under the leadership of Ret. Captain Simmons who designs the program with a focus on hands-on and real-world instruction. Upon graduation in May, the Cadets are eligible for career options with AFRD.

Capt. Simmons reports that the Cadets are preparing for the following:

  • Turnout gear and rapid dress drills
  • Aerial operations (ladder climb)
  • Ongoing preparation for the mandatory Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT).
  • Group leaders earn the honor to wear the "Red Helmet" which is industry protocol at AFRD and other fire rescue stations across the country.
