Winter is here and there is NO OFF SEASON AT HPRS! Registration is now open for our full calendar of 2023 events as we kick the new year off with our winter season.
First Up - We're returning to El Paso Texas to put on our totally revamped Franklin Mountains Trail Runs. We've redesigned the Half Marathon, 27k (to 30k), and 55k courses; and we've added a new 50-mile. Join us in the desert as we continue the tradition of this fantastic event over the course of three days in January!
Then we return home for our 6th Annual Stories Ultra! We're once again hosting our 6-hour, 15-hour, and 30-hour timed events where runners will take on as many miles as they can or want within their allotted time frame. There are no DNF's in our timed events. Sign up for 15 hours and only run for 10? GREAT! Your final result is simply the miles you ran/hiked within those 10 hours. NEW THIS YEAR is our additions of a 10k and Half Marathon to the weekend's festivities.
In March we're heading back to Cuchara Mountain Park in La Veta to host our newest event, the 1st Annual Cuchara Snowshoe Races. Join us for 5-Miles, 10-Miles, 15-Miles, or 50k; all distances have generous cut-offs where you just need to be done by 8pm. As long as there is 6" or more of snow on the ground, snowshoes will be required. Should we have less than 6" on the ground, you can ditch the snowshoes and take on the distance with regular shoes and traction.
Finally, Join us in April for our totally revamped We Belong Virtual Series. This is a month long masterclass in trail and ultra running. We'll teach you the ins and outs of trail and ultra, with a focus on longer distance (ultra) efforts. Information dispensed is totally relevant to non-ultra as well. Classes are held via zoom once a week, with a second class each week where we welcome a guest industry professional. We'll explore the history of ultra, training, gear, nutrition, injury prevention, and more! The month ends with a virtual 50k or 12-hour on your own accord. All for the low price of $40!
Our winter calendar of events are all open for registration and it would be an honor and privilege to be able to serve you. We also welcome you to register for any of the other events on our 2023 calendar as shown below!

From Beneath The Red Hat
Friends,
Happy New year! I hope this finds you all happy and healthy following the holiday madness. It's a new day, and a new year, with all the hope and promise that comes along with it. Now is as good a time as any to commit to a new you, new adventures, no ways to explore who you are and what you're all about. I hope that you'll choose to allow HPRS to be one of your vehicles for personal growth in 2023.
In the coming days I'll be publishing my yearly "State of Our Sport Address" on the HPRS blog. I will also read the same article for the HPRS Podcast if you're someone who would rather take the time to listen as opposed to taking the time to read. This address is a snapshot into my views, worries, and optimism for what is ahead within the sport of trail and ultra running. I spend more hours than I care to admit on this address, and is the culmination of everything I learned and experienced in my role through 2022. There are some BIG takeaways I'll be sharing and I hope you'll take the time to read or listen.
As part of this month's newsletter, I wanted to give you a snapshot of how HPRS did in 2022, and a deeper dive in to the make-up of our community.
Our yearly registrations are counted during the time period between December 1 and November 30th of the following year. In this case, December 1, 2021 through November 30, 2022. For this past year's time frame, we handled 1,944 total registrations across all of our events. This is a NEW HPRS RECORD for the most registrations through that timeframe (1,864 in 2019), and is a 19% increase over 2021.
We also keep track of registrations handled during each month of the year. We started this timeframe with an all time record for registrations handled in one month of 339 registrations in December 2021. We then broke that record in October 2022 with 352 registrations handled. We're starting the new period (12/1/2022 - 11/30/2023) with another NEW HPRS RECORD for most registrations handled in a single month at 375.
For the timeframe 12/1/2021 through 11/30/2022 we also set NEW HPRS RECORDS for registrations handled in the months of December, January, February, March, October, and November.
Between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022; we welcomed 1,856 runners through the doors at HPRS, which is the second most runners in a year since we started in 2014. The best year is still 2020, when we had 2001 runners join us at the only place where running never stopped.
On the volunteer side we graciously accepted help from 259 unique individuals, which is second behind our 2021 number of 261 unique individuals. These volunteers provided 4,022.5 hours of volunteer service at HPRS Races and through trail work efforts, a NEW HPRS RECORD, breaking the old mark of 3,831 (2021). Volunteers provided HPRS with an average of 14.68 hours per volunteer in 2021, this number increased to 15.53 hours per volunteer in 2022.

We are so incredibly thankful to all of you for the role you played in our crushing 2022. It is not lost on us that you have a tremendous number of choices when it comes down to who to run with. We hope you'll continue to forge our path ahead as the premier trail and ultra series in Colorado.
Whatever this new year brings, the challenges we'll all face together and while alone, I do hope to see you all on the trails of HPRS events. There's a few changes coming down the pipeline, all focused on improving our commitment to accessibility and inclusivity, while also bringing our community closer together.

A Review of the 2022 Colorado Ultra Scene - Human...
By HPRS Race Director John Lacroix PREFACE When I started HPRS in 2014, I created a spreadsheet (like ultrarunners do) of every trail race in Colorado of a half-marathon in distance or longer. I then recorded how many finishers each of those...
