Fire and Injury Prevention:
Staff has been busy this year in many areas of fire and injury prevention. Since January, there have been 241 fire inspections conducted with 893 violations found. Personnel have checked 39 child restraints for proper installation in vehicles, put up 15 new smoke alarms, and replaced 20 batteries. In-person presentations and social media posts resulted in approximately 4,300 people being reached during Fire Prevention Week.
Insurance Rating Inspection:
The NC Office of State Fire Marshal inspected the fire department in January, and the department improved from a class 4 to a class 3. Better ratings can possibly lower fire insurance premiums and also suggest that a department is overall better equipped to respond to fires in the district. Only around 12% of fire departments in the state are a class 3 or higher; many of which are full-time career departments.
Emergency Responses:
The department is on pace to respond to approximately 650 calls this year. This is back on pace with pre-pandemic numbers which were decreased due to the county changing dispatch procedures and is a 20% increase over responses for 2015.
