Maine Beef Association Education Program and Annual Meeting at the Ag Trades Show
Wednesday Morning: Cooking Demonstration with Chef Rob and Colt Knight at Presentation Stage was sponsored by the Maine Beef Producers Association

Chef Rob talked about which cuts of meat could be used to make Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches and then demonstrated cooking the thinly sliced beef with onions. Colt assembled the sandwiches and distributed 100 samples to the folks watching the demonstration. See the recipe here.

Wednesday Afternoon Beef Education Program

Introduced Dr. Sean Birkel, UMaine Extension Climatologist who showed the wealth of information available on the Maine Climate Office website. You can access current and past weather information, climate data, weather predictions, climate reports and research. For more information contact berkel@maine.edu

Also introduced Matt MDACF Healthy Soils Program who talked about how this new program can assist beef producers including rotation grazing, silvopasture, agroforestry, etc. His office will have incentives to support healthy soils projects on the farm, educational programs, including peer to peer mentors, and farm tours.

We were treated to a virtual farm tour of Heartstone Farm in Charleston. Dan Kaplan talked about how he started and expanded his grass fed beef farm during the pandemic focusing on providing high quality beef by mail order through their website. Herd manager Percy Lorette talked about their intensive pasture program and weighing animals regularly. They are working with nearby farms to increase the number of animals they can process.

Randy Hall, East Dixfield
Randy understands the importance of “giving back” to help beef producers in and outside of Maine. He is a former Council member of the Belted Galloway Society and a longtime contributor to successful National sales. As Beef Show Coordinator of the Fryeburg Fair, he is responsible for the state’s largest exhibition of beef cattle. Now beginning his 3rd term as a State Representative and now Ranking Member of the Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry Committee, he’s an important producer representative at the Maine State House.

Heartstone Farm, Charleston
Owner Dan Kaplan and Manager Percy Lorette purchase feeder cattle and finish for marketing of the farm’s grass-fed beef through a Dover-Foxcroft retail Market and shipment site for very popular online sales.
Beef Seed Stock Producer of the Year
Deerfield Acres, Casco
Owner Jim Willey breeds, raises, and markets high quality Hereford breeding stock keeping his bloodlines current and breeding program highly selective. He produces quality heifers that have been leased and successfully exhibited by junior exhibitors.

Youth Awards
Mackenzie and Madelyn Ramsdell, Limington
Cousins Mackenzie and Madelyn have a dedicated work ethic and compete successfully both in-state and as representatives of Maine at the Big E. Their showmanship skills have earned recognition and they help other exhibitors both by example and with hands-on assistance as needed.

Hall of Fame Award
In her role as University of Maine Cooperative Extension Professor, Donna has provided dedicated support to all Maine beef producers throughout her career and has been especially valuable to the MBPA leadership in the last decade. Her advice and assistance in developing educational programming plus always staying current on the most up to date beef topics were extremely helpful. Her initiation of and dedication to the production of the Maine Beef Newsletter as well as Co-coordinating BQA training along with 2021 HOF Honoree Cindy Kilgore informed beef producers and helped make us all better.    
USDA Announced Grants Awarded to Maine Farms and Firms
Maine Farm Receives USDA Rural Development Value Added Producer Grant - assists agricultural producers seeking to establish or expand markets for their value-added agricultural products. Apple Creek Farm LLC will use the working capital grant funds to expand processing, marketing, and sales of their certified organic eggs, beef, chicken, sheep, goats, and sheepskins. This project will allow for an increase in customer base and revenue and will add two employees. Full description of VAPG grant recipients can be accessed here.
 
The Meat and Poultry Inspection Readiness Grant (MPIRG) program assists currently operational meat and poultry slaughter and processing facilities in obtaining a Federal or State Grant of Inspection. Five Maine farms and/or poultry processors received grants under the MPIRG program. Congratulations to Olde Haven Farm LLC, Fork Food Lab, Hatch’s Custom Meat Cutting, Nest and Mullen LLC, Rooney’s Meat Shop. Full description of these grant recipients can be accessed here.
 
USDA Ag Marketing Service - Local Food Program Grant assists projects that develop, coordinate and expand local and regional food business enterprises that engage as intermediaries in indirect producer to consumer marketing to help increase access to and availability of locally and regionally produced agricultural products. Smithereen Farm received a grant Harnessing Maine’s Local Farming & Fishing Economy through the Minke Kitchen Food Hub, Full description of grant recipients can be accessed here.

The Maine Beef Producers Association is accepting dues for the 2022 year. Annual dues are $35. For an extra $25 you can get a year subscription to County Folks. National Beef Prices

USDA Ag Marketing Service publishes beef cattle prices for a number of locations throughout the US.
This report shows the Weekly average steer price for this year, last year and the 5-year average. Get the full pdf of this National Weekly Cattle and Beef Summary.

National Monthly Grass Feb Beef Report - includes wholesale and retail (direct to consumer) prices of cuts of meat as well as small and very small producer carcass prices (wholesale $4.39/# - direct to consumer $7.97/# to $9.15/#.)
Vermont Monthly Local Beef Report - includes carcass prices as well as retail prices (direct to consumer) per cut for locally raised beef. Dressed beef carcass value for October 2022: $325/cwt.

Grants & Loans
  • Rural Rehabilitation Trust Fund: The Division manages this dedicated revenue fund for purposes of providing policy and loan-making decisions of this fund. Investments of fund dollars go to providing low interest loans to farmers for purchasing land, or feeder cattle. The fund also provides capital improvement loans to agricultural fairs. Newsletter Subscription Information
The Maine Beef Newsletter (MBN) is now received by over 730 readers, has been offered as an educational resource by University of Maine Cooperative Extension since 2011. As of January 1, 2015, the MBN transitioned to electronic-only delivery. There will still be four ways to receive the MBN from UMaine Extension:
1) Maine Beef Newsletter remains available online for free! You can sign up to receive the newsletter through your email or view the archived issues anytime at http://bit.ly/PPfarming If you currently do not have an email, you can get one for free from several email hosts. If you do not have a computer, community libraries have computers for you to use to access information on the Internet and to view your email.
2) Those with no email can opt to pay an annual subscription to receive the newsletters monthly for $15/year. If you are interested in subscribing send a $15 check made out to UMaine Extension to Piscataquis County Cooperative Extension, 165 East Main St., Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426. 
 3) A third option is to come into the Piscataquis or Penobscot County Extension Office and pick up a free printed copy of the newsletter. 
4) Maine Beef Producers Association members who do not have an email on file will receive a printed copy of the newsletter as a benefit of their membership. 
      We appreciate our readers referring others to the newsletter, and sharing it with your family and friends.
