Newly Added Film Classes
Newly added to the catalog as a special community event is a film screening and then discussion with the director of Last Flight Home (Timoner 2022) (Course 11704) on Wednesday, March 8 from 6:30pm-9:00pm at JCC of Mid-Westchester. After making a splash at Sundance prior to its release worldwide in theaters last fall, Ondi Timoner's bittersweet movie documents in unvarnished verité style her own father's storied career as the founder of Air Florida, celebrates his personal and professional achievements, and chronicles Eli Timoner's final days as he and his family count down until the end of his life under California's medical aid-in-dying law.
Marilyn DeRight will be leading the recently added Film Discussion: Movies About Jewish Identity (Course 11702), starting Thursday, March 2, 2023. Films to be discussed are Arranged (2007), Madame Rosa (1977), Liberty Heights (1999), and Menashe (2017). Students must view the movies on their own prior to class; all are available at local public libraries and through online streaming services.
Kate Hearst's film class highlighting four female-directed films within the top 100 greatest films of all time on Sight and Sound's 2022 poll has been postponed to the spring term. Game-Changers in Cinema (Course 11693) (formerly named European Women Directors on Sight and Sound's 2022 Greatest Films of All Time Poll) will now begin on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. Films to be discussed include the movie at the very top of the list, Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, a 1975 work by Belgian director Chantal Akerman, as well as the following three cinematic masterpieces, all directed by women: Cleo from 5 to 7 (Agnes Varda, 1962), The Gleaners and I (Agnès Varda, 2000), and Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Céline Sciamma 2019).
