Mercury went direct on January 18 and Uranus went direct on January 22. After that there won't be any retrogrades until April 21, when Mercury once again goes direct. Happy Chinese New Year, which began on the New Moon and welcomes the year of the Water Rabbit, which is supposed to be a year of cooperation and conciliation.

As I finished writing this I then heard about the shooting in Monterey Park, CA at a dance hall where people were celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year. Thoughts and prayers as always are with the families of those who lost their lives, and to those who are in the hospital and are hopefully recovering. And tonight I heard about another shooting in Half Moon Bay in California. Astrologically speaking this also coincided with Uranus stationing direct, and as I write below a direct station does not mean that suddenly everything is positive but a station is an intense degree and can indeed intensify both positive and negative thoughts. This Uranus direct degree falls on the same degree as the Lunar Eclipse on May 5, and as those of you know who have supported my work for so many years, we always must pay attention to when the slower moving planets and the Nodes fall on a nearby eclipse whether before or after. Let's hope that we will indeed now move forward since there are no retrogrades until April 21, when Mercury once again retrogrades.

This month's lunations occur with the Full Moon on January 6, 2023, 23:07 GMT. Tropical. 16° Cancer 21’. Sidereal. 22° Gemini 16’. punarvasū and with the New Moon on January 21, 2023, 20:53. Tropical. 1° Aquarius 32'. Sidereal. 7° Capricorn 27’. uttarāṣāḍhā. If you have any planets, points, or angles around those degrees (I would take a one degree orb) then whatever is represented by that planet, point or angle, will be prominent and important until the next lunation, meaning that if something is conjunct this month's Full Moon, it will be prominent until the next Full Moon on February 5, 2023, and if something is conjunct this month's New Moon, it will be prominent until the next New Moon on February 20, 2023. The New Moon represents new beginnings and can help you to institute a change you have been thinking about while the Full Moon is an accomplishment or culmination and gives the push to continue on that path. If your birthday is between January 5-7, then the Full Moon is in your solar return (varṣaphala) or close enough that it will be important for the year ahead until your next birthday, meaning that it may be year when things you have been working on will manifest, or feel like they are moving in the right direction, so continue with whatever is fulfilling you. If your birthday is between January 20-22, then the New Moon is in your solar return (varṣaphala) or close enough that it will be important for the year ahead until your next birthday, meaning a change is bound to happen, so work on that change. It could be a physical move, job change, relationship change, or simply working on yourself to integrate new patterns and habits into your life. Expect a great deal of transformative experiences that will make you want to change or take a step in a different direction. Take your time but do head in that direction, since otherwise it will happen to you whether you initiate it or not. (Scroll below for more Celestial Events.)

As I have said before, do not be fooled when a planet goes direct, since it will first take a few days for that energy to start to move forward quickly. Mercury and Venus rebound quicker than Mars through Pluto, but Mercury still takes time to move ahead, since Mercury still stays in its retrograde arc, or shadow, until February 7 as we see above. Uranus on the other hand, takes an even longer time to move forward and since its retrograde period is longer and slower, the retrograde arc does not apply but what does apply is the fact that Uranus will stay on the same degree of its direct station for a little while. Because retrograde and direct stations are points of power and intensity, often powerful events occur around the station, and as we saw on Saturday evening the 21st, the shooting in Monterey Park followed by another today on the 23rd in Half Moon Bay in CA show that things happen that are unexpected, powerful, and intense. Sometimes positive and sometimes negative, but while now there are no retrogrades until April 21, the fact that Mars stationed direct on January 12, Mercury stationed direct on January 18, and Uranus stationed direct on January 22, makes January a month of wild events.

Lisa Marie Presley passed away on January 12, exactly on the Mars direct station, and in fact a sudden death like that was also influenced by Uranus, since while technically Uranus went direct on the 22nd, it already stands still two weeks prior to the actual station. Even though she was a musician who recorded a few albums, her claim to fame was as the daughter of Elvis Presley, and since he continues to be iconic and beloved, so was she as well to his fans. If you have a planet that is conjunct the degree that Uranus stationed at Tropical. 14° Taurus 56’. Sidereal. 20° Aries 51’ (I take one degree on either side), then think about what has happened in the area of your life represented by that planet, point or angle, since Uranus crosses it three times in the last 18 months and there may be more than one event that has happened. Remember it is not always tragic as in the case of Lisa Marie Presley, but you have a sudden romance, or job opportunity, or a surprise means of financial gain. Remember that keywords for Uranus include inspiration, excitement, sudden occurrences, instability, independence, rebellions, and many more. Sometimes things happen that we were not expecting, and we are forced to make a move in an area of our lives. Sometimes it may be a change we have wanted to make for a while, but nothing happens until Uranus comes along and forces us to make that move.

What makes this Uranus direct station especially intense is that it is at the same degree as the Lunar Eclipse that will occur on May 5th. This makes this degree especially potent and is another reason why so many things have happened around this station because Uranus has basically stopped in its tracks, but will be around this degree between January 14 and January 30. And then the eclipse will once again ignite what Uranus has been poking at since it moved into that degree in July 2021. With Jupiter entering that degree in the fall, take careful note at what it might mean in your chart since the intensity of that part of your life will be there through 2024, but we will be under the influence of Jupiter, planet of opportunity and abundance, rather than Uranus, which often bring sudden events, you cannot always control. You can also look at the squares and oppositions as well. (These are the degrees I talk about in my annual Sensitive Degrees webinar. Scroll down to purchase.)

Mercury's direct station on January 18 followed by Uranus' direct station on January 22nd are the last retrogrades until Mercury retrogrades on April 21, followed by Pluto retrograding on May 1, Saturn on June 17, Neptune on June 30, Venus on July 23, Mercury again on August 23, Uranus on August 29, Jupiter on September 4. I spoke a lot about that in the 2023 Sensitive Degrees Webinar, and will talk more about that when each planet retrogrades but for now Mars, Mercury, and Uranus stationing direct within 10 days, indicates that things that have been languishing may move forward very quickly and intensely.

Many of the snafus that you felt under Mercury Retrograde will start to ease up, however, even though Mercury is direct, it is still within what we call its shadow or retrograde arc, that is the period from when Mercury first crosses the degree where it eventually goes direct (December 12, 2022) until the date when Mercury crosses for the final time the degree where it first stationed retrograde (February 7, 2023), as you can see in the above table. This is important in that if you have a planet, point, or angle in between Tropical. 8° Capricorn 8' - 24° Capricorn 21' or Sidereal 14° Sagittarius 3’ - 0° Capricorn 16’ you may have felt this particular Mercury retrograde more than usual and you still have until February 7, 2023 before it leaves that span of planets. Look back over the last few weeks and see for yourself.

The good news is that we won't have to deal with that pesky Mercury retrograde again until April 21-May 15. Right now get used to moving ahead with plans that may have been put on hold, or that may have slowed down. You can start making those plans now and once you leave Mercury's retrograde arc, they will begin to manifest. Look at the area in your chart that is framed by the degrees of the retrograde and direct station. Since retrogrades are a period of reflection and revision, and since the planets slow up, think about what you realized or worked on over the last month and get to work on realizing those goals and plans.

This is the span of degrees of the retrograde arc of Mercury, or the span between the Mercury retrograde and direct stations: Tropical. 8° Capricorn 8' - 24° Capricorn 21' or Sidereal 14° Sagittarius 3’ - 0° Capricorn 16’ . Look to see which house they fall in since that can give you a hint as to which area of the chart is affected. Tropically Mercury retrograde spanned Capricorn, and sidereally Mercury spanned Sagittarius after it retrograded for a day or two at 0 Capricorn. This area of your life might have become unpredictable, may have slowed down, or taken an unexpected turn but now they will straighten out and move forward.

Read if you use sidereal Indian astrology. If you have a planet, point, or angle in your chart between 14° Sagittarius 3’-0° Capricorn 16’, where Mercury retrograded and is now direct, this is what may have slowed down, reviewed, revised, and ultimately reinvigorated and reinvented.

Sun. power, vigor; Moon. maternal, mind; Mars. strength, courage; Mercury. speech, learning; Jupiter.  knowledge, wealth; Venus. love, happiness; Saturn. sorrow, fear; Rahu. intensity, compulsion; Ketu. extremes, spirituality; Lagna. destiny, vitality. If you want to use Uranus, Neptune and Pluto you can look below at tropical Western astrology for their keywords.

The house that sidereal Sagittarius occupies is the area that may have slowed down, reviewed, revised, and ultimately reinvigorated and reinvented. If you do not know which house sidereal Sagittarius occupies, look at your ascendant, or Moon, or even your Sun, and just count from there. General descriptions for bhavas (houses) are as follows:  

1. appearance, destiny, temperament, personality, constitution; 2. Money, family life, food, speech, early childhood; 3. Siblings, Fine arts, courage, desires; 4. Mother, happiness, real estate, vehicles; 5. Children, romance, investments, speculation; 6. Open enemies, work, competition, obstacles, illness; 7. Marriage, partners, contracts, passion; 8. Life and death cycle, research, accidents, other's money, inheritance; 9. Father, teacher (guru), religion, higher learning, opportunity; 10. Career, status, public recognition, reputation; 11. Profits, rewards, gains from work, awards, older siblings; 12. spiritual practice, secret enemies, foreign travel, debt, confinement.

This series of classes is NOT a crash course even though when you complete it you will have rudimentary tools with which to start analyzing the chart. We will cover the basic level of Jyotisa, or Vedic Astrology. This incorporates basic tools for beginning chart interpretation and forecasting including history, some Sanskrit meanings and pronunciation of concepts, and supplemental reading material and videos, and discussion group in between classes. Everyone will receive recordings and power point presentation the next day, whether you attend live or not. If you sign up for the entire series you will thoroughly learn Jyotisa and even some Sanskrit. After taking Level One and Level Two you will be prepared to take the test for Certification Level I of ACVA (American College of Vedic Astrology), if you choose. There will be opportunities to read supplemental material, do assignments, and review what we learned, but that is up to you. A book list will be provided once you register. The class will be virtual, and you will receive an audio-visual presentation, audio MP3, and extensive handouts. 
 
This class is appropriate for those who are starting at the beginning, or for those who have studied with me, or have learned in the past, and want to refresh your knowledge. We will start with the basics of the chart, so that you have all the tools you need to begin to tackle chart interpretation. But do not expect to finish the course and be able to read an entire chart. The book, which was first released in 1997 was re-released in 2012 with added notes, and revisions and additions, including a new foreword and epilogue and larger print. The book was taken from Jim's notes, and was compiled, edited, and added to by Kenneth Irving after Jim's death in 1995. It is now published by Words and Things, a publishing venture by Kenneth Irving and myself.
