A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE CNA BOARD

The CNA Board members meet the first Tuesday of every month except for the months of July and December. We meet at 2pm in the Foundations Building on the Whatcom Community College campus. The Board meetings are open to all community members and you are all invited.

We share in the responsibility of keeping informed in local and state policies; residentional, business and commercial development; best practices in healthy and sustainable community growth; and the interests, concerns, and needs of the Cordata community.

We are currently a nine member Board, but our by-laws allow up to 15 members. Board membership is a rewarding way to engage with the public and private sectors, to drive and shape growth in Cordata, and to serve the Cordata neighbors. We welcome you to join us. If you're interested, drop in to a Board meeting or send an email to k8mcdonald1016@gmail.com.

We have started a new feature in our newsletters as well as the community meetings. Let's highlight people and places in Cordata.

For example, I just learned that Richard Marcus, a Cordata neighbor who took up photography during the pandemic, takes pictures of our wildlife on his walks around Cordata. His photos have raised the interest of the City of Bellingham and the Audubon Society. You can see some of his work on the Seeing Bellingham facebook page.

If you have stories to share, please feel free to provide information, via EMAIL,, to include in the monthly newsletters or to announce at the bi-monthly community meetings.

Larabee Lager -- A brewery is coming to Cordata. It will be located in the Burlington shopping center in the smae space where the Asian buffet restaurant was located.

Maple Bar -- 4252 Cordata Parkway is now fully open. We will be sharing coupons at our January community meeting.

Price Cutter Cleaners -- Curreently located in the Burlington shopping center plans to move to a new location on Stuart and Meridian.

The majority of injuries resulting from earthquakes are due to falling objects, not structural failure.

A home hazard hunt is the first step toward identifying and correcting these vulnerabilities. From strapping your water heater and confirming flexible to connections to appliances, to relocating or securing heavy or glass objects on high shelves, to fastening tall pieces of furniture to walls, every corrective action reduces our exposure to injury during an earthquake.

Home Hazard Hunt

Another interesting article about the housing shortage and the resulting homelessness. It takes a different spin on the sources of the housingf challenges in cities like Bellingham and other West Coast citites.

THE OBVIOUS ANSWER TO HOMELESSNESS

If you'd like to share your thoughts, I can include them in the next newsletter.

INTERESTING PREDICTION ON BELLINGHAM HOUSING PRICES

The article excerpted below is based on a review of data regarding housing prices. I'm not sure that this is accurate as there are factors that may have not been considered; however, it is still interesting. If you have any thoughts on the issue, feel free to send an email and I'll include them as support or rebuttal in the next newsletter.

U.S. Home Price Insights -- December 2022

The CoreLogic Home Price Insights report features an interactive view of our Home Price Index product with analysis through October 2022 with forecasts through October 2023.

CoreLogic HPI™ is designed to provide an early indication of home price trends. The indexes are fully revised with each release and employ techniques to signal turning points sooner. CoreLogic HPI Forecasts™ (with a 30-year forecast horizon), project CoreLogic HPI levels for two tiers—Single-Family Combined (both Attached and Detached) and Single-Family Combined excluding distressed sales.

The report is published monthly with coverage at the national, state and Core Based Statistical Area (CBSA)/Metro level and includes home price indices (including distressed sales); home price forecast and market condition indicators. The data incorporates more than 40 years of repeat-sales transactions for analyzing home price trends.

GREENWAYS

One of the features of our beautiful area is the abundance of parks, trails, open spaces, and wildlife corridors. If you have ever lived or visited other cities, you will have gained a greater appreciation for how many natural spaces are available to us. That is one of the reasons that voters have approved the four previous Greenways Tax Levies.

Bellingham’s Greenways Program began in 1990 when a group of citizens organized to pass a property tax levy to raise funds for park and open space land acquisition and trail projects. The idea was to link Bellingham’s trails, ridgetops and shoreline corridors with a continuous series of parks, forests and greenbelts. The Greenways IV Levy was approved by voters in 2016 and will expire at the end of 2023.

The Greenways Advisory Committee (GAC) is comprised of Bellingham residents appointed by the Mayor and approved by City Council to advise Parks Department staff and the Council on the expenditure of Greenways funds. Greenways Advisory Committee meetings are open to the public. Click here for meeting schedules and materials. To learn more about the work of the GAC, you can read the GREENWAYS STRATEGIC PLAN which outlines the priorities for current Greenways Tax Levy funds as well as priorites for the proposed 2023 tax levy.

If you would like to be a part of the effort to promote the Greenways V Tax Levy, join us at an informational meeting 7pm on January 3rd at the Explorartions Academy located at 1701 Ellis Street.

A New Year is a time for new resolutions for a better you. Here are a few ideas to keep yourself from taking the process too seriously.
