As we start a new year, the gyms are packed with people who have made resolutions to lose weight, exercise more, and change their lifestyle. A friend who works at a gym told me by the end of February it will be two thirds less crowded due to people starting strong but not enduring.
As people of faith, we endure. Galatians 6:9 says, “And let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
The journey of life and faith is a marathon, not a sprint. I think exercise and good health habits are great, but they have to be done consistently if there are to be good results.
In contrast to the “fix–it” theology of many who believe God will just grant them what they ask no matter what, we have a God who always gives us what we need regardless of how WE perform. The endurance we are called to in 2023 is not one of doing something for a reward, or always being perfect, but seeing God in all things in our life of faith, even when we go off course or take a detour.
May we be consistent in prayer, worship, and service. We do this not to obtain brownie points from God, but to live the life of faithfulness God calls us to daily.
Have a blessed 2023!
In Christ,
Pastor Jeff
