An Interview by Sharon Baker of Teleduction for DANA

Meet Carla Stone, President of the World Trade Center Delaware - leading partner in international trade, creating global economy jobs throughout the state.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES
It is our pleasure this month to feature our intern, Hanwool Jang’s article about the Consumer Electronics Show (CES®) in Las Vegas that she attended in early January. The show is an example of the diversity among the World The World Trade Centers Association members as the WTC Las Vegas is a partnership between the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) and the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), producer of the CES. As those of you who read her article about holidays around the world, You will agree that she is a very thorough researcher and engaging and beautiful writer. Enjoy.

It is the goal of our internship program to provide opportunities for significant student growth and connections. We are always looking for young people who will benefit from our training and programs. In the past, we did not pay any interns, but this created a barrier to those students who could not afford to work without pay. We now offer a limited number of paid internship positions for Delaware residents attending Delaware colleges. In addition to pay, they will attend our events and travel with us to Washington or New York, and around the state to meet with companies, elected officials, and organizations as their class schedules permit. We will work with their professors to design an internship that meets curriculum requirements for credit. Not all positions require international business knowledge. Right now, we really would like to have a graphic designer to help us. Please encourage the young people you know to apply for any internship. We hope it will be the best six months of their college career.

CES 2023: BE IN IT
I attended the Consumer Electronics Show (CES®) in Las Vegas During the first week of January. It is an annual trade show organized by the CTA® (Consumer Technology Association). The World Trade Center Las Vegas is a partnership between the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) and the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), producer of the CES, The event showcases the presentation of new products and technologies in the consumer electronics industry, CTA and participating companies, including major brands and startups. The world’s most highly regarded leaders and industry advocates present the latest IT tech trends. That’s why CES is called the most influential tech event in the world.

In his address to the CES 2023, Steve Koenig, Vice President of Research at the CTA, pointed out 5 Keywords for CES2023. He said that the trends of CES2023 are metaverse and web3, transportation and mobility, sustainability, health technology as well as gaming and services.

Koenig said, “The metaverse is closer than you think.” He acknowledged the metaverse is a speculative term, but he said it is a real trend. He describes the metaverse as "next-generation online experiences." He foresees metaverse as a service (MaaS) and the metaverse of things (MoT). These were highlighted as digital twins, virtual spaces, shared experiences, and virtual scenarios. He said transportation and mobility, one of the major themes of CES2023, were highlighted by the advancements of autonomous systems, the transformation of the in-vehicle experience and the evolution of the electrification ecosystem. In-vehicle enhancements coming were noted as screenification, voice control, retail and entertainment services and features as a service (FaaS) model. In health technology, he sees new frontiers in innovation, including anytime virtual visits, remote patient monitoring, fitness and wellness platforms and access to online pharmacies. He further predicted that use cases will include fitness technologies, telehealth services, and at-home patient monitoring, which will reduce patients’ time in hospitals. Koenig argued that the United States has 164 million self-described gamers. He said that Gaming is already entrenched in American culture. According to his presentation, about 73.6 million are mobile gamers, and the average time spent gaming per week is 24 hours.

He mentioned the need to pay attention to the gaming market. He predicted a diverse wave of technological innovation that will make business safer and more efficient and will help individual consumers lead better, healthier, more entertaining lives.
John Deere unveiled ExactShot and a fully electric tractor during CES 2023. That tractor is the CES Innovation Award winner in robotics this year.

ExactShot enables farmers to reduce the amount of starter fertilizer needed during planting by more than 60%, notes Deanna Kovar, vice president at John Deere. Rather than apply a continuous flow of fertilizer to the entire row, the technology uses sensors and robotics to place starter fertilizer precisely onto seeds as they are planted in the soil. Using a sensor to identify when each seed is planted, ExactShot then applies only the amount of fertilizer needed, about 0.2 ML, directly on the seed as it goes into the ground. To that point, Deere’s new fertilizer technology offers farmers significant cost savings and environmental impact reduction. “In the process of growing corn today, fertilizer accounts for a large portion of total greenhouse gas emissions. That means Exact Shot can have an immediate, measurable impact on our environment today,” Kovar explained.
A prominent feature of the new smart home section is connectivity. New smart home trends are emerging that should give users a more connected and seamless experience with the Internet of Things.

Following the launch of Matter, which is a proprietary standard for home automation, at the end of 2022, several companies have taken advantage of the CES 2023 platform to unveil new Matter-certified devices. The Matter interoperability standard lets smart devices on different platforms work together. Consumers can purchase products from different brands without considering the brand of electronic products they have been using. It means that small businesses’ products can compete regardless of the brand name.

Samsung presented a sustainable future home through SmartThings during the CES. SmartThings connects all furniture in the house and even car. It can effectively manage the flow of energy without waste and features such as AI Energy Mode can help optimize energy use when there’s a surplus or shortage in energy. The AI Saving Mode setting constantly monitors and reduces energy usage based on the estimated energy bill, with the Away Notification sending notifications when unnecessary energy usage is detected. Consumers can also control the amount of washer detergent and water usage in the washing machine through AI scan. With a system including in-vehicle cameras and sensors, Ready Care helps monitor driver cognition and focus, alerting the driver when changes in the driver’s condition are sensed. For example, on a very cold winter day, it will turn on the heater and close the curtains before arriving home.
