January’s cold weather won’t keep the staff and patrons at the Town of Valdese Parks and Recreation Department from having a great time and welcoming 2024! Basketball is in full gear, and it has been remarkable to see the youth teams back in the Community Center for the Wayne Owens Gymnasium’s inaugural season. These long Saturdays of games do mean that we do not have any open gym times on Saturdays in January. Sign-ups for volleyball are open, and we’re excited to offer this program in the renovated gymnasium in February. Space is filling up quickly, so sign up soon. Also along the lines of programming, we have had one of our athletic supervisors move on from the department, and we wish him all the best. This does mean we will have a new staff member coming on board in late January or early February, so stay tuned for a new face in the parks and recreation office. This person will run our indoor soccer program this coming February, and registration for that program is open now, as well.
January also means that patrons will be making fitness goals for the New Year. We have incredibly competitive rates for pool and fitness memberships, and we offer some excellent classes with instructors who have been with us here for many years and have helped patrons meet health and fitness goals, whether large or small. Memberships are available for individuals and households and for 3 months or a year. We invite you to come take a look in the fitness center, try a class, or go for a swim. Visit the website, click on schedules, and see when there is a class or practice for you. As a reminder, we do accept many of the wellness benefits offered for seniors, such as Silver Sneakers, Renew Active, and Silver and Fit. If you don’t know if your plan carries a wellness benefit, please contact your insurance provider to find out. We hope to see you here in January and beyond.
In a quick facility update, Parks and Recreation Aquatics staff have experienced some difficulties with the air heater in the Bubble in recent weeks. The Bubble is 23 years old at this point, and it uses pretty specialized machinery to stay inflated and heated. Parks and Recreation staff have been working with HVAC and air-inflated structure professionals to find both short and long term solutions that work best for our patrons. With uncertainty about temperatures in the space, we have halted pool party reservations and delayed swim lesson programming until we have warmer weather or a working heater. The water heaters are working great, and the water is comfortable, so we are keeping the pool open for open swim, lap swim, and other aquatics programming.
Come see us today at your Valdese Parks and Recreation Department and see all the things that we have to offer!
