‘Fight the Cold’ Coat Drive



The Rotary Club of Mississauga-Meadowvale and Streetsville United Church will be hosting a drive-thru coat drive to collect adult and children’s winter coats for the annual ‘Fight the Cold’ Coat Drive. The details are as follows:

Coldest Night of the Year Walk



The Coldest Night of the Year is a family-friendly walk to raise money for local charities serving people experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness.

I will be participating in the Coldest Night of the Year Walk Mississauga Meadowvale on February 24, 2024, as part of the Streetsville United Church team, which is raising funds for The Dam. The Dam is a great local organization that has been helping youth through youth programming and development for over 25 years.

Meeting – Streetsville Heritage Conservation District Study



The City is engaging the community to determine whether Streetsville meets the legislated criteria for consideration as a potential Heritage Conservation District (HCD) under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act. The study will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will determine whether or not the area meets the criteria as an HCD. If initiated, the second phase would include drafting an HCD Plan which provides policies and guidelines to manage change within the proposed HCD boundary. An in-person meeting will be held to gather community input as follows:

Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Update



As you may know, Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras are actively enforcing the speed limit in Mississauga. ASE uses a camera and a speed measurement device to help enforce speed limits in school area community safety zones. You may have seen some of these cameras in our community.

ASE and traffic calming measures have greatly helped to decrease vehicle operating speeds and increase speed limit compliance on Ward 11 roadways, creating a safer community and improving safety on our local roadways for all road users.

Current Ward 11 ASE Locations:

·        Swinbourne Drive – Bancroft Drive to Douguy Boulevard- Began September 16, 2023

·        Joymar Drive – Donata Drive to Thomas Street- Began December 15, 2023

Winter is here! Be a good neighbour this snowy season

When winter weather hits, we can all do our part to help keep each other safe, make snow clearing more efficient and support snow-clearing crews as they work.

Shovel early and often

Be a good neighbour and try to clear your sidewalk and driveway of snow and ice as soon as possible after a snowfall. This will allow others to travel safely, whether they’re going to work, essential appointments or getting some exercise. Shoveling early and often will also limit heavy snow buildup.

When shovelling, remember to clear around your furnace and hot water tank vents. Covered vents can be a carbon monoxide hazard. If you have a fire hydrant on your property, please clear around it so it’s visible to fire crews. Shovelling can be a lot of work. Take breaks, keep hydrated and dress appropriately.

If you can, lend a hand

Check in on your neighbours and consider offering to help those who may need help clearing their sidewalk or driveway.

Park vehicles in your driveway during snow clearing

Vehicles parked on residential streets make it hard for crews to clear the snow properly and efficiently. This can make it difficult for emergency vehicles to get through and for you to get in and out of your street.

When the City is plowing, avoid a parking ticket and help out our crews by parking your car in your driveway instead of on the street. Remember to remove sports equipment like basketball nets and garbage bins from your curb.

During snow clearing, the City may suspend temporary parking permits and new ones will not be issued. To find out if temporary parking permits have been cancelled, contact 311, follow @MississaugaSnow on X or visit mississauga.ca/temporaryparking.

Peel Regional Police Extortion Investigative Task Force (EITF)



Peel Regional Police is currently investigating a disturbing trend of extortion attempts. Victims are contacted through a variety of social media platforms and demands for money are made under threats of violence, which have occurred in some incidents. Sixteen incidents are currently being investigated.

In response to these incidents, Peel Regional Police has launched an Extortion Investigative Task Force (EITF). This will be a dedicated team comprised of investigative and intelligence units supported by tactical teams. The EITF will continue to work with community members and other law-enforcement agencies on the investigations.

Peel Regional Police is asking the public to immediately contact police if they, their family or their business is targeted with threats of violence to extort money or other valuables. Suspects are using social media platforms to contact victims and perform these illegal acts. They often know the victim’s name, phone number, address and business information. Police are advising not to make any form of payment and to contact police immediately.

How the City Controls Its Winter Salt-Use



Snowfall, cold temperatures and freezing rain can quickly lead to hazardous conditions on roads and infrastructure, like sidewalks, trails and bridges. By pre-treating, plowing and salting infrastructure in the right way, at the right place, at the right time, the City of Mississauga is maintaining road safety while limiting the impact of salt on the environment.

Here’s what the City is doing, and what you can do, to manage salt-use and minimize its environmental impacts.

Effective salt management at the city

• Pre-treating roads with brine. Applying a liquid brine solution to roads and bridges before a snowfall or freezing rain prevents ice from forming and snow from sticking to the road. Less rain and snow freezing to the roads means less salt is needed to keep the roads safe.

• Plowing more often. The City plows when snowfall reaches five centimetres of accumulation. Plowing more frequently means less salt is needed and makes salt, when it is applied, more effective.

• Using advanced weather monitoring and equipment. The City uses advanced weather monitoring and salt trucks equipped with on-board technology to monitor road conditions and apply salt only when and where it is needed.

• Applying treated salt on colder days. The City uses specially treated salt on roads, bus stops and priority sidewalks when the temperature drops below -7° Celsius. This treated salt works better at colder temperatures, so less of it is needed.

How you can help

• Clear snow off your sidewalk and driveway soon after the snow stops to avoid ice build-up.
• Always remove snow before applying ice-melting and anti-skid materials as recommended by the manufacturer. It only takes one to two cups of salt to cover a single-car driveway
• Salt only works on ice and snow when the temperature is above -10° Celsius. Use alternatives like sand, grit, mulch, non-clumping kitty litter or treated salt to add traction when the temperature is below -7° Celsius. Some of these options can even be swept up and reused.

Collaborative Efforts to Reduce Retail Theft



Investigators from the 11 Division Criminal Investigations Bureau have collaborated with Square One Shopping Centre and Loss Prevention Officials on an initiative to reduce retail theft and enhance community safety.

Between December 4 and December 16, 2023, investigators engaged in a retail enforcement blitz through foot and mobile patrols to detect, arrest and process offenders with emphasis placed on repeat, violent and/or individuals that were wanted on outstanding arrest warrants.

In lieu of criminal charges, in appropriate circumstances, police diverted some offenders and offered assistance by way of community referrals. There were 60 arrests made, numerous criminal charges laid and over $43,000.00 of stolen property was recovered.
