Calendar Changes
We are in the heart of potential schedule changes due to the winter weather!

Here's what you can do to stay in the know:
  1. Make sure the district has up-to-date contact information! We send alerts through our district's notification system called SchoolMessenger. If you are not receiving alerts call a school office and check your student(s) records. Please note that this service is only available to current students and families.
  2. Text message alerts - we need your cell phone number on file AND you have to text y or yes to 67587 in order for us to send alerts. If you're not receiving them, contact Kristin Heidemann, 641-585-2323 or [email protected]
  3. Our district website has our calendar on the home page.
  4. This same calendar is also viewable in the FREE Forest City CSD app. Anyone can download this app from their app store. As schedules change, the calendars update.
Athletics Hall of Fame Committee Now Accepting Nominations for the Class of 2024
The Forest City School District has launched the nomination process for the new Athletics Hall of Fame, which will recognize and honor former athletes, coaches, teams, administrators and patrons who have made significant contributions to the district’s athletics program.

The deadline to submit nominations for the 2024 inaugural class is February 16, 2024. Nomination forms, either an online form or a downloadable form, are available on the district’s website. Paper nomination forms are also available at the District office, or the Forest City Chamber of Commerce. Nominations will only be considered with a completed form.

Consideration criteria have been established for each category of nominees —player, coach, administrator, contributor/patron and team. A player nominee must be a graduate of Forest City High School and out of school for at least four years. They also must have received all-conference and/or all-state recognition in their respective sport and contributed at a high level both in athletics and in the community. A coach nominee must have been a head coach at Forest City High School for a minimum of five years with their teams competing in a consistent and exemplary way. An athletic director or administrator must have served in the district for a minimum of five years and supported or contributed to the development of athletics at Forest City High School in an outstanding way. A contributor/patron nominee must have supported or contributed to the development of athletics in an outstanding way. A team nomination must be an accomplished group.

Inductees will be notified mid-May and plans are in development for the recognition ceremony to be held during the September 2024 Homecoming weekend.

Classroom & Activity Highlights
When students embark on the task of creating an alloy by metallurgically bonding copper and zinc to make a penny, they engage in a fascinating process of alloy formation. By combining these two metals, typically in a ratio of 95% copper and 5% zinc, they initiate a molecular integration resulting in the creation of bronze. This alloy not only possesses a distinctive golden hue but also exhibits enhanced properties such as increased durability and resistance to corrosion. The collaborative efforts of the students in manipulating the metals and witnessing the transformative bonding process not only contribute to their understanding of material science but also provide them with a tangible connection to the composition of the coins in their pockets.
5th-grade ELP students participated in the Paper Table Challenge sponsored by Central Rivers AEA. Teams had 60 minutes to complete the challenge, using only newspapers and one roll of masking tape.

Tables are judged by meeting the competition parameters and by its efficiency: the amount of weight the table holds/weight of the table.

Students also had to submit a video describing the building process and the design.
40 Elementary students earned and enjoyed a lunch at A&W as a PBIS award!
In the month of January, the Elementary PBIS team, teachers, and students are reviewing school expectations and rewarding students for meeting these expectations in various areas.

When a student is seen doing a great job, they are entered into a raffle for an awesome reward. In week two, our primary focus was in the classroom with tickets given by teachers. Two students were drawn from each class to share donuts and juice in the teacher's lounge.

Here's a picture of one of the groups of kids from the 1st grade who received a PBIS Reward of donuts.
Students in the high school projects class put on a restaurant for staff in the school to attend. They went through a job interview process, training for the job they got, and put together a restaurant within the school. They had a lot of fun doing this project and are hoping for another run at it in the future.
Large Group Speech is off and running!

There are 40 students involved in Large Group Speech and they are competing in 13 categories.

District Large Group Speech is Jan. 20 at Decorah and State Large Group is February 3 at Dubuque Senior.

We invite the public to see our performances on February 1 for Large Group Speech Night.

This will be held at the Boman Fine Arts Center at 6:30 pm.
Good Results!
The Forest City Community School District conducted radon screenings the week of December 4 at Forest City Elementary and the Bus Garage.

The State of Iowa requires radon testing at least once every five years for all Iowa public school attendance centers, licensed preschools and licensed child care centers.

The Forest City Elementary and Bus Garage radon testing results came back WELL below the EPA's action level of 4.0 pCi/L, and even below the World Health Organization's action level of 2.7 pCi/L!
