Student Spotlight: How Charletta Royster-McNeish Reinvented Herself

Charletta Royster-McNeish, aka Chachie to her friends, did not plan to start all over at this stage in her life. She had just been laid off from a 20-year career in business management, working up the corporate ladder with only a high school diploma, and soon realized that she couldn’t advance without a college degree. That same day, she aimlessly drove down Manhattan Beach Boulevard in despair, worried about her future. She came to a stop in front of El Camino College, looked up at the sign on the corner, and immediately enrolled in the winter 2020 term. “I saw the sign for El Camino, which means ‘the road,’ ‘the way,’ and I just knew this would lead me to where I needed to be. I had put my education on hold once before, now this is my priority.” Read more about Chachie's higher education journey HERE.

Campus Spotlight: Onizuka Space Science Day - March 16, 2024

The El Camino College Onizuka Space Science Day is an annual STEM event for local science-minded students in grades 5-12 and is free to participants. The event honors Astronaut Ellison Onizuka's memory and is dedicated to his dream of inspiring the youth of America to strive for and achieve their career goals. This year marks the 38th anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger accident that took the lives of the seven crew members, including Ellison Onizuka. Additional event information can be found HERE.

Athletics Spotlight: National Champions Men's Soccer Team Honored at ECCCD Board of Trustees Meeting

The El Camino men's soccer team earned a National Championship in December with four student-athletes named to the United Soccer Coaches All-America team, and Marvin Gamez earning Junior College Division III Player of the Year honors!

35th District Senator Steven Bradford recognized the Warriors soccer team and coaches during the December 18th ECCCD Board of Trustees meeting. Additionally, commemorative proclamations were also provided by Congressman Ted Lieu, Senator Ben Allen, Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, and LA County Supervisors Janice Hahn and Holly Mitchell. The team was also recognized by Mayor Chen and the Torrance City Council during their December 19th meeting.

On February 15th, El Camino College will hold a campus parade to continue to celebrate the team. Congratulations to our amazing student-athletes and coaches! We are so proud of all of you!

Community Partners: Honda Employees Give to the Warrior Pantry

In December, our friends at Honda held a food drive as part of their holiday festivities. Shawn Shepherd, Benefits Manager at Honda's Torrance office, organized the drive as a way for his department to help spread holiday cheer.

“We are proud to partner with El Camino’s Warrior Pantry, which provides students with food and toiletries so they can focus on their education to power their dreams,” Shepherd said. “It was a great opportunity for us to give back to the community where we live and work.”

Thank you Honda for your holiday food drive supporting El Camino's Warrior Pantry. Our students will truly benefit from your generosity.
