President's Message

Happy New Year!

I hope your holidays were filled with family, friends, and good times.

It seems like I just wrote the January 2023 message a few months ago, but here we are beginning a new year and a new semester of ALL. As usual, we have a variety of courses to select from, some favorites as well as many new ones which will be presented by our dedicated and knowledgeable coordinators. I’m always amazed at the scope of the course offerings. How lucky we are to have such talented coordinators, as well as the hard-working curriculum committee, who make this all happen. Registration began January 8, so I hope yours is in the mail.

Since we are on break, why don’t you catch up on some of our podcasts and video interviews? You can access all our podcasts, videos and other media productions 24 hours a day by going to our website, scrolling down the page to the Recent Posts section and click on “Visit Our YouTube Channel” or “See All of our new Videos and Podcasts!”

Joan Freedman, Jean DeVincentis, Marianne Triplette, Holly Anderson, and Maggie French have produced some great media for your viewing. There are many interesting interviews and discussions by our coordinators and members. One of our ALL members, Dr. AntonYereniuk, did a two-part podcast interview on Ukraine. He shares his knowledge and history of his homeland, plus the story of his family. If you haven’t listened to this yet, please do.

Lastly, this is a pivotal year for ALL, since five of the current members of the board of directors’ terms will expire in June. We are hopeful that you will consider serving on the board or a committee. Think about it. Why not help to keep ALL the great organization that it is?

May you have a happy and healthy new year and continue to enjoy our courses and events with your ALL friends.

Peace,

Dianne Tattersall

ALL President

Chasing Away The Winter Blues

Leslie Dealy is a recently retired social worker. During her 35-year career, she focused on treating clients suffering from anxiety and depression. One of the most effective techniques was the use of mindfulness, helping clients to stay present in the moment. She has found ALL classes to be very stimulating and believes they foster community.

The picture at the left is of Leslie enjoying a prior visit to Paris, France.

Winter can be long and lonely at times. Here are some helpful hints to get you through the dreary, short days and winter chill.

First, just breathe! Sit in a comfortable chair with arm rests and take three, slow, deep, cleansing breathes to the count of 4 in, hold 4 and release to the count of 4.

You can also sit near a window in your home with a cup of your favorite tea. Notice the scene outside your window while inhaling the soothing aroma of your tea!

Another tip is to bundle up so you're nice and toasty and take a moderately-paced, mindful walk while noticing the trees, the sky or the beach and the ocean.

Notice everything around you and just breathe slowly and deeply.

It's always helpful to practice gratitude. Think about

what you are grateful for in your life ; your family, friends, good health, faith, material prosperity. When indoors, write a list.

Start or continue a daily journal. Give it a heading for the New Year, such as Peace, Love, Fortitude, or Gratitude. Enter a few thoughts every morning. Try to start with something for which you are grateful.

Do a countdown in your head or on your calender. Start from December 21rst and see how far you've already come through the Winter.

Finally, embrace the beauty of Winter. Notice the pure, white snow covering the ground and the trees. It's a time for reflection and slowing down.

Oh, make sure to be in touch in person, by phone or if need be, by text. Meet with friends or family at least once a week. We all thrive on being connected to avoid loneliness.

Sink into a good book .

If all else fails remember:

Everything has it's season and Spring is on it's way!

December 10, 2023 Holiday Potluck Pictures

The annual ALL Holiday Potluck was held in on Sunday, December 10th in the Great Hall of the new Wilkens Science building.

Arriving at noon, forty-four people attended and brought a delicious variety of food to share.

The Hospitality Committee created a festive atmosphere with decorative tables and centerpieces, all of which led to a special afternoon for members to relax and enjoy some time with their ALL friends.

New Exhibit In The ALL Art Gallery

Carol Coteus Weavings

Coordinator Carol Coteus has had a rich and varied career which included all operations of the restaurant and food service industry, followed by several years as a travel agent and finally, as a teacher and administrator in the field of early childhood education.

Although these may seem very different career paths, the common bond is people. Carol loves people, and the best way to bring people together is through a good meal. She loves to share recipes with others, to read cookbooks and to hear what others are cooking.

I was born into a family of artists; some formally educated, while others of us were self-taught.

My paternal grandmother was among the first graduating class of women at the Chicago Institute of Art. She remained an accomplished artist until her death at age 85. Her daughter followed in her footsteps many years later. Her son, my father, became a self-taught potter and candle maker, and my brother is presently a juried artist who does exhibits all over the country. He, too, is self-taught.

I have dabbled in many different art forms including dance, music, and drawing, but I awoke one morning 10 years ago with the vision of a weaving created from nature. I began collecting twisted roots and branches, molted feathers, moss covered bark; whatever I found on my walks through the woods. After researching weaving techniques done by Navajo women, I fashioned my first “loom” by tying the gathered end of my warp to a dining room chair with the other end tied around my waist. When the chair proved to be unstable and insufficient in weight, I reattached the wrap to a 40lb dumbbell, which dangled over the side of the chair. That was my beginning.

I have since explored working on a 36-inch four-harness floor loom, a knitter’s loom, and a 20 inch four-harness loom; but I find working on the rustic frame loom built by my husband, Paul, to be my favorite. Since this loom does not have the benefit of foot pedals, which open the shed for a speedy back and forth motion, progress is extremely slow. It is not unusual for one weaving to take as long as a year to complete.

Dave Mullen Photographs

Coordinator Dave Mullen has taught Bowen Family Systems Theory and mindfulness in professional development courses for over a decade and is currently co-teaching a Zoom class through the Non-Anxious Leader Network. He is a retired educator with over 40 years experience, 30 of those as a Head of School in Maryland.

A native of Boston, Dave graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music in the late 1970s. Upon failing to become principal trumpet in the Boston Symphony Orchestra he began a career teaching music in Washington DC. After a decade as a high school band director and administrator he earned a graduate degree in education and became Head of School at The Nora School in Silver Spring, Maryland. He retired in 2021 following an interim headship at Wye River Upper School on Maryland’s Eastern Shore during the year of covid.

Dave began his photographic career in 2000 when his school built a darkroom, which then found itself needing someone to use it. Switching to digital imaging in the early part of this century, he has been published, received awards, exhibited in several juried shows, and has placed work in several private collections. He has taught photography, Photoshop, and iPhoneography at Montgomery College as well as at the high school level, and has run workshops and given talks at many camera clubs across the DC and Cape Cod areas. He currently teaches photography at the Cape Cod Art Center. He and his wife split their time between Cape Cod and Washington DC.

“Whether traveling or photographing closer to home, I've always been fascinated by the juxtaposition of elements, both physical and psychological, within the frame. Whether the absolute power of water over the apparent power of stone, the modern building against the baroque, or the messiness of love beneath the cold beauty of art, I find the spirit of places can often be captured in the apparent dissonance of details within. I leave it to the viewer to read the story inside the vignette. What is behind the kiss, behind the folded flag? While the grand vista still speaks to me, I find that these juxtapositions often have more lasting impact.”
