January 2024

January means that true winter is upon us here in Manchester and Saratoga, and we’re pulling out our snuggest boots and coziest sweaters, turning up the heat in the stores and making sure the coffee pot is always at the ready. Most importantly, we’re pulling out some of our favorite cozy comfort reads – books that can make a gloomy day feel just a little bit brighter.

Cassidy suggests The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden – she says it’s “a magical, whimsical read that weaves together Russian folklore and fairy tales. It is the story of a girl and her gifts, of the frost demon who loves her, and the Bear who wants to destroy them all.”

Maeve’s favorite cozy read is the series that begins with An Irish Country Doctor by Patrick Taylor – she calls them "James Herriot, but for people."

Beth has been curling up with The Maid by Nita Prose. “It’s delightful-a murder mystery that is well- written, funny, suspenseful, and with intriguing characters, especially the main character, Molly. I wanted a light, fun book to read, and this exceeds my expectations!”

Fredrik Backman’s books (A Man Called Ove, the Bear Town trilogy, My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry) are Liz’s wintry go-to. “His stories take place in Sweden where it’s snowy and cold but his characters exude warmth and humanity.”

If you’d rather take your mind somewhere warm, we’ve got books for that too! Rachel recently enjoyed Candace Millard’s riveting nonfiction The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journey, a riveting page turner about a voyage through the Amazon rain forest – can’t get much warmer than that!

However you stay warm this winter, we hope to see you soon!

With cozy wishes,

Featured Release

by Kaveh Akbar

A newly sober, orphaned son of Iranian immigrants, guided by the voices of artists, poets, and kings, embarks on a remarkable search for a family secret that leads him to a terminally ill painter living out her final days in the Brooklyn Museum. Electrifying, funny, and wholly original, Martyr! heralds the arrival of an essential new voice in contemporary fiction.

“The best novel you'll ever read about the joy of language, addiction, displacement, martyrdom, belonging, homesickness.” —Lauren Groff, best-selling author of Matrix and Fates and Furies

"Simply beautiful in a startling, shocking way. I loved this book for all its aspects; characters, plot and discourse on life, love and religion. And the sly way Akbar managed to weave it all together with wry but sensitive humor. It reminded me of the first time I read Christopher Moore's Lamb." — reviewed by Maeve Noonan

The Women

by Kristin Hannah

From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes The Women—at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.

Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.
