Original drawings and related ephemera of Bob Clarke, a mainstay illustrator at Mad Magazine who had the most cartoon-like style through the late 1950's and early 1960's, and also designed the label of Cutty Sark scotch. Clarke arrived after the original editor Harvey Kurtzman left MAD. Included here are eight images (some original drawings), and a seven page signed contract between Tom Koch and Robert Clarke with the Swedish Bonnier Magazine group to publish a paperback edition of the “Mad Worry Book” in Swedish. Signed by William M. Gaines and Ebbe Zetterstand for their respective magazines, and dated September 15, 1980. The American Type Founders Co. was the dominant American manufacturer of metal type from its creation in 1892 until at least the 1940s; it continued to be influential into the 1960s. Many fonts developed by the ATF Co. in its period of dominance, including News Gothic, Century Schoolbook, Franklin Gothic, Hobo and Bank Gothic, remain in everyday use. The author was remembered by readers of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's "Confessions" as the sexagenarian friend who attempted the seduction of Rousseau's companion. The English translation, though not strictly literal, follows the French closely, preserving it stylistic characteristics. The text transcribed exactly from the Bibliotheque publique et universitaire de Geneve. The three cover bindings, two as pictured here, and a third interior with only two brown inlays. The images printed on boards present scenes from Viennese history with this one commemorating the second conquest of Vienna by Napoleon, an illustrated score by Hadyn, and commemorating social events in Vienna during 1809. The covers are pristine, white leather designed by Wilhelm Melzer, who also designed the illustrated box holding latter. The Wiener Werkstätte is this publication, one of the loveliest Viennese "dance-gift" of the period -- an outstanding document of the Viennese Art Nouveau. Hansard's Plan for a Typographic Bank Note; finely engraved plate of a Bank of England £1 note design submitted by Thomas Ransom; an exceptional engraved plate of bank note design elements submitted by R.H. Solly; an engraved folding plate of a printing press for bank notes also submitted by Solly; and 2 finely engraved steel-printed plates of geometric designs submitted by Richard Williamson. A landmark work. In the three or four years preceding publication, "convictions before the criminal courts for the circulation of Forgeries of the Bank of England Note" had risen precipitously, resulting in the "increasing reluctance of Juries to visit with the extreme penalty of the law." The committee's findings, largely penned by Thomas Curson Hansard, had great impact on the course of anti-counterfeiting measures and technology in America as well as Great Britain. Many of the suggestions for technological improvements were in fact derived from American sources. This copy dedicated to M.R. Delaine. Rouart was proficient in all the printmaking techniques; etching, engraving, mezzotint, relief and lithography. He worked as a collaborating illustrator for many authors throughout the 1920s -- in 1925 he did aquatints for a livre d’ artiste Le Cantique Des Cantiques and 20 wood engravings for Rene Boyleve’s Le Meillieur Ami. Art Deco binding by Jacques Anthoine-Legrain, stepson and assistant to Pierre Legrain. The text develops a dialogue and philosophical interpretations of Socrate, Phedre, and Eryximaque as they view a dance performance at a banquet. He was probably the most prolific book illustrator in the first half of the twentieth century in France. Boston: Published at the Anti-Slavery Office, 1846. 126 pages. 19.5 x 12.5 cm. American reformer who became a national hero in 1844 when he was tried and sentenced as a slave stealer following his attempt to help seven runaway slaves find freedom. He was branded on his hand by the United States Government with the markings "S S", for "Slave Stealer". Interior clean and fresh, frontispiece portrait of Walker has foxing, image offseting to title. The preface by Maria Weston Chapman presents a concise summation of the current antislavery position of the day. Three full page wood engravings and a lock of hair between pages 20-21. " The English Spy, both in text and in illustrations, is sometimes as coarse as ever was Smollet in word or Gillray in drawing, it contains many lively representations of life, high and low, gives much curious information about real people still recongisable under their fictitious names [including Charles Kemble, Macready, Grimaldi, Mme. Vestris, Mathews and Wallack, and also George IV and his mistress] , and preserves many tales of a past age."
