What Temperature is Dangerous? How Cold is Too Cold?

Cold Weather Ahead on Yellow Warning Sign, with snow-covered trees in the background

As we age, our bodies become less efficient at generating and retaining heat, making our loved ones more susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite. The body’s natural insulation, which includes fat deposits and muscle mass, gradually diminishes over time. This makes it increasingly difficult for seniors to maintain their core body temperature in the face of cold exposure.

Early vs late onset Alzheimer's disease:

How do they differ?

Cartoon of white-haired man with confused expression and question-marks in thought-bubbles, talking to young woman with long brown hair in scrubs with stethoscope

Early onset Alzheimer’s disease is when someone develops the condition before the age of 65 years old. Late onset involves the disease occurring from the age of 65.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, and its prevalence increases with age.

Doctors often categorize Alzheimer’s disease into early onset or late onset. Typically, the age cut-off for these types is 65. However, some experts use 60 years old as the cut-off for early or late onset.

Living a sedentary lifestyle can harm your overall health, and sitting too much each day can particularly be harmful to your heart.

A new study suggests that sitting for 10.6 hours or more a day is significantly linked to future heart failure and cardiovascular death risk.

This risk is still heightened in people who meet the recommended 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per week.

The Hidden Toll of Loneliness:

How Social Isolation Affects Physical and Mental Health

Gray-haired person sitting on bench overlooking shadowy water surrounded by trees

Humans are inherently social animals who rely on interpersonal relationships for a variety of needs. When people experience healthy friendships, family dynamics, and even casual positive interactions with others, they feel a sense of belonging and satisfaction, which translates to better health. However, when social connections and relationships don’t meet an individual’s needs, feelings of loneliness and isolation may occur with potentially devastating consequences.

Boom Again

Human memory works a lot like a muscle. It’s a faculty that can be strengthened through exercise, and that will wither away if it’s not stimulated often enough. The good news is that there are a lot of fun activities that can help people of all ages connect with their friends and exercise their memories in innovative ways. Trivia games like Boom Again are a great example of how games can be put together to make learning and memory exercise more fun for all ages.

Boom Again is a trivia board game released in 2020.

The trivia game comes packed with over 2,200 questions that draw upon the culture and shared experience of those who grew up in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

As the game’s website puts it: “The game questions aren’t meant to trip up your brain like in other trivia games. Rather, they’re designed to be fun, to spark memories of “days gone by” — and mostly to bring people of all stripes together for a good time.”

Learn more about Boom Again and the benefits of trivia in general here.
