January 2025

Art Appreciation

Art appreciation abounds this January both in the classroom and on our walking tours. Page Knox is introducing a new course on Masterpieces of French Art from the Medieval Era to the Modern Age. The first class meets this coming Wednesday, January 15, 2025, and will address Medieval Spiritual Life (13034). The following two Wednesdays cover Late Medieval/Early Renaissance Court Life (13035) and then Louis XIV Court Life (13036). Each class on French art across the centuries requires separate registration and can be taken as a stand alone. Derive more by signing up for the entire series.

Also scheduled for later this month are two lectures from Bob Potter. On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, he will discuss Black American Artists Amy Sherald, Kerry James Marshall, and Kehinde Wiley (12943). View major works by these three painters, learn about their stories and those of the subjects they paint, and see video commentary by the artists themselves.

On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Potter focuses on Georgia O’Keeffe from New York to New Mexico (12944). Through a wide range of images, a revealing profile of the artist, and videos of the artist discussing her work, explore the art of Georgia O’Keeffe and her enduring legacy as one of the leading women of modern art in the twentieth century.

January also includes five art appreciation walking tours.

Ronnit Vasserman takes students through The Way I See It: Selections from the KAWS Collection at the Drawing Center (13072) on Thursday, January 16, 2025. Featuring works by luminaries such as Willem de Kooning, R. Crumb, and Martín Ramírez, alongside graffiti legends DONDI and FUTURA 2000, the show celebrates underrepresented artists that have inspired contemporary artist Brian Donnelly aka KAWS.

On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Page Knox explores Siena, the Rise of Painting, 1300-1350 at the Met (12996), just before the exhibit is scheduled to close. Register now to secure your last chance to see this display and examine the pivotal role of Sienese artists at the dawn of the Italian Renaissance.

An encore tour of Make Way for Berthe Weill at the Grey Art Museum (13064) with Helen Lee is scheduled for Thursday, January 23, 2025. The exhibit surveys the groundbreaking career of the first woman modern art dealer. Lee then heads back to Met for Flight Into Egypt: Black Artists and Ancient Egypt, 1876 to Now at Met (13057) on Monday, January 27, 2025. See how Black artists and other cultural figures have engaged with ancient Egypt through visual art, sculpture, literature, music, scholarship, religion, politics, and performance.

At the end of the month, on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Knox returns to the American Wing at the Met (12995), which houses approximately 20,000 works in this newly updated space. This visit will not repeat anything covered in her November tour.

For a wide assortment of artwork created within the past few years, head over to the Scott Room of the Scarsdale Public Library, where you may admire Scarsdale Adult School's Student/Teacher Art Show. Hung throughout the room are paintings, drawings, and gel art created by some of our instructors and by students in their classes.

Student artists, instructors, friends, and family celebrated at our opening reception, when arts & crafts teacher Hope Friedland was inducted into our figurative Hall of Fame. Many of her pupils posed with her in front of her award-winning painting, "Driving Miss Daisy."

Stop by to see these impressive works on public display before the end of the month when they will be dispersed and returned to private holdings!
