Farewell

Twenty-two years ago, I walked into the BIAC office for the first time. New to Connecticut and new to the field of brain injury, I could never have imagined the profound impact this organization would have on my life. Within weeks, it became so much more than just a job—it became my passion and my purpose.

Over the years, you have taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, strength, and the capacity for grace in the face of hardship. Serving this community has been the work of my life and the greatest honor I could have hoped for.

When I started in 2002, I was one of just two full-time staff members. We had only two part-time team members managing the helpline and a budget that allowed for nothing more. I am incredibly proud that, with the support of dedicated boards of directors, passionate staff, and committed community members, we stabilized and grew BIAC into the organization it is today. That said, I have always wished we could have secured more sustainable funding, as it was this challenge that often kept me up at night. Brain injury remains underrecognized, and I will continue to hope for greater awareness and increased support for services like those BIAC provides.

As I reflect on this extraordinary journey, I am overwhelmed with gratitude—for the mission, the work, and the lessons learned along the way. It has been a privilege to serve this community, and I can only hope we’ve made a meaningful difference in the lives we’ve touched.

While I am stepping away from this role, I will never step away from the cause I care so deeply about. I look forward to seeing all the incredible things that lie ahead for BIAC and for this community that means so much to me.

Thank you—for the memories, the impact, and the relationships I will carry with me always.

With deepest gratitude,

Julie Peters

A Successful Community Outreach Event

Judgment and Decision-Making After Brain Injury for Capacity Determinations

At the invitation of the Continuing Education Committee of the Connecticut Probate Assembly, Bonnie Meyers, BIAC Director of Programs & Services, recently delivered a presentation on the impact of brain injury on judgment and decision-making. The session focused on educating judges and attorneys about the complexities of brain injury, including cognitive deficits such as impaired executive functioning, and how these challenges may affect an individual’s capacity for judgment and decision-making. This valuable and critical information will help inform judges during conservatorship proceedings and capacity determinations. The event was extraordinarily successful, with over 65 probate judges and several attorneys in attendance.
