A Note from the Executive Director

NMASBHC is bracing ourselves for the excitement and anxiety that the transition to anything new, including a new year (!), can bring. While there are sure to be opportunities to bring new and important health resources to additional children and families in 2025, there also are sure to be obstacles and challenges to that critical work. As all of our partners launch this new season, please know that we stand hand in hand with you to build a better future for New Mexico's youngest and most vulnerable residents.

The staff and Board of NMASBHC hope to see you in the coming months. We invite you to join us at one of the many trainings described in this newsletter to be best equipped to serve patients. And, we hope to see you at our state capitol as we share with our elected officials about the value of school health services. We'll be at the Roundhouse for Primary Care Day, Public Health Day and Behavioral Health Day. And, as a teaser for February, watch for new community education tools we'll be launching, in partnership with SBHA, to celebrate SBHC Awareness Month.

In the meantime, we wish you a very healthy and happy New Year!

As we move into a new year together, I’m looking forward to spreading the word about the hot-off-the-presses updates that the CDC made to their Contraception Guidelines in late 2024. Reproductive health experts from across the US put together the most significant update in eight years. This helpful summary from the Reproductive Health Access Project highlights some important changes in the new guidelines, such as more expanded options for managing bleeding side effects of contraception and updated pain management options for IUD procedures: I use these guidelines very regularly to determine which contraceptive methods are safe to offer patients with medical conditions, and what medications could interact with contraception. Check them out here!

Updated provider tools from the CDC reflecting these changes, including an updated chart for the U.S. MEC and an updated bleeding algorithm, can be found on their website. The CDC Contraception app has been updated for the iPhone and Android. We will practice application of these evidence based best practices at the Jan 13 training in Las Cruces and office hours – see below for info about how to sign up for those!

OFFICE HOURS ARE BACK!
