First, I want to wish everyone a very healthy, happy, peaceful, and prosperous new year. As we enter the new year, it seems as if it is defined by Mars Retrograde, given all the events that transpired since it began its retrograde journey on December 6, and the Mars-Pluto opposition, which will be exact its second time on January 3rd, and will have its final pass on April 27 after Mars goes direct on February 24. Scroll down to read about the Mars-Pluto opposition, which applies whichever zodiac you use.
In the meantime now that Venus is an evening star moving closer and closer towards its retrograde position, which occurs March 2-April 13, 2025, and then conjunction with the Sun on March 22, 2025, do look at the evening sky, since Venus is a beautiful object to behold, especially with the Moon moving from dark new moon towards its crescent phase, so that it does not obliterate the view of Venus. If you go to earthandsky.org it will tell you a lot about Venus and what else to see in the night sky. Venus' greatest elongation East in the western sky, when it is farthest away from the Sun at 47-48 degrees east of the Sun, occurs on January 9-10, 2025. Don't miss the beauty of the bright evening star Venus because this position, like the retrograde, only occurs every 18 months. (I presented some of this material in my 2025 Sensitive Degrees Webinar which I mention below.)

This month's lunations occur with the January 13, 2025 Full Moon. 22:26. Tropical. 23° Cancer 59'. Sidereal. 29° Gemini 53’. punarvasū, and the January 29, 2025 New Moon. 12:35. Tropical. 9° Aquarius 51'. Sidereal. 15° Capricorn 44’ śravaṇā.
If you have any planets, points, or angles around those degrees (I would take a one-two degree orb) then whatever is represented by that planet, point or angle, will be prominent and important until the next lunation, meaning that if something in your chart is conjunct this month's Full Moon on January 13, 2025, it will usually be prominent until the next Full Moon on February 12, 2025. And if something in your chart is conjunct this month's New Moon on January 29, 2025, it will usually be prominent until the next New Moon on February 28, 2025. The New Moon represents beginnings and can help you to institute a change you have been thinking about while the Full Moon is an accomplishment or culmination and gives the push to continue on that path. If you have planets, points, or angles conjunct this month's lunations, you will feel a need to take action with either something new (New Moon) or the manifestation of something you have been working on (Full Moon). Of course, the houses that these lunations fall in, will highlight those areas of life as well.
If your birthday is between January 12-14, then the Full Moon is in your solar return (varṣaphala), the annual birthday chart, or close enough that it will be important for the year ahead until your next birthday, meaning that it may be year when things you have been working on will manifest, or feel like they are moving in the right direction, so continue with whatever is fulfilling you. Set your intentions high and gather your confidence since this is the year when things will take place. The Full Moon on your birthday is important but when you have an eclipse there, even if it is a partial lunar eclipse, the year ahead will be even more significant than usual. make sure that you are prepared to make those changes that come with manifesting your hopes, otherwise they can pass you by.
If your birthday is between January 28-30, then the New Moon is in your solar return (varṣaphala), the annual birthday chart, or close enough that it will be important for the year ahead until your next birthday, meaning a change is bound to happen, so work on that change. It could be a physical move, job change, relationship change, or simply working on yourself to integrate new patterns and habits into your life. Expect a great deal of transformative experiences that will make you want to change or take a step in a different direction. Take your time but do head in that direction, since otherwise it will happen to you whether you initiate it or not.
The January lunations also occurred on the same dates and degrees in 1987 and 2006 so think about anything important that might have occurred in that birthday year. Although other planets will be different from those years, it still may indicate the area of change or importance in those years. (Scroll down for more Celestial Events.)

As we see above the Mars retrograde cycle is very intense and long and even though it occurs every 2 years and 2 months for 72 days (not counting the retrograde arc period), this is one of the most intense I have seen in a long time. Each Mars retrograde straddles one sign in about 7 months, or two signs in 9 months. During this period, which extends beyond the retrograde arc (shadow), Mars straddles tropical Cancer and Leo, and straddles sidereal Gemini and Cancer. If you scroll to the end of this article, you will see a list of Mars events that have occurred and continue to occur since Mars stationed retrograde on December 6, 2024. While this particular cycle is very intense, and can be destructive, please do not be afraid or walk away thinking it has no positive side, since it absolutely does, but I would be remiss if I did not also talk about all aspects of Mars opposite Pluto, as well as some difficult periods to look out for. But I would also be remiss if I did not explain how to approach this cycle in a positive and constructive manner. Let's begin with Mars opposite Pluto, which is adapted from the November 2024 News and Views. -
Mars opposite Pluto. As we see above, the Mars-Pluto opposition occurs three times since it takes place when Mars is direct, then retrograde, then direct. Whenever there is a major aspect occurring three times within a retrograde cycle, it will have more impact, which means that these particular months between October and May, when Mars completes its retrograde arc (shadow), will seem like day after day something intense, obstructive, explosive and violent will take place especially around the Mars retrograde station on December 6, the three Mars-Pluto oppositions, with the next one occurring on January 3, and then the Sun opposite Mars on January 16th. These dates are especially noteworthy for events in the world that breed hostility, potential violence, and accentuate impulsivity, aggression, war, and meteorological extremes. There may be an increase in the possibility of fires, accidents, terrorist activities, and anything in which you do not use the ability to reflect on your actions.
In your day-to-day life, people are more impatient, quick to anger, and may drive quickly without taking the normal precautions, among other things. To counteract that, be patient, steady, take some deep breaths, do not be reactive, and be sure to be super sensitive to other people's needs, even if it means for a few days, putting your own needs on the back burner. Remember what goes around comes around and you will be rewarded for cautious and sensitive behavior in these times. Your patience and the ability to act decisively and energetically but compassionately and diplomatically will be thoroughly tested. Move slowly and cautiously especially when driving since you never know who else will be on the road.
The positive spin on the days around Mars opposite Pluto is that it can be transformative and enlightening, after the initial realization that change is necessary, as is going inward to reflect before going outward and applying all that you have learned. It means that in your own life, the aspect may even have a transformative and powerful effect since it usually makes it clear that there are changes that need to happen in some area of your life, and if you have been lamenting about this over the last few months, during this retrograde period you might actually find that you cannot stand still any longer. Because it is retrograde Mars might not allow you to complete those changes, since retrogrades take you in directions that are unique and that you may not always have control over, but they do allow you to look inside, and revise plans you have made, and once Mars moves direct you may find they can actually materialize.
While everyone will be affected by this aspect, you are especially affected if you have a planet, point, or angle conjoining or forming another aspect to the degree of Mars and Pluto, knowing that you will be involved with whatever the aspects indicate for you three times, since Pluto moves slowly and Mars is retrograde. The chart above shows the degrees of the opposition, so don't avoid confronting major changes that need to take place whether related to health, job, finances, relationship, or just improving your own lifestyle. It is most important since if you do not initiate those changes, an outside occurrence will make it happen, and you will not be prepared for it. For instance, if you do not feel like yourself physically or mentally, seek help, and nip any condition you might have in the bud. If you see that you spent too much money over the holidays or over the past year, take charge of your budget, pay any debt back, and simply spend less on items you do not need. These are just a few examples, but over the next few months if you have any planets, points, or angles between 0-4 degrees tropical Leo, Aquarius, Taurus, Scorpio, or 6-10 degrees sidereal Cancer, Capricorn, Aries, Libra, you probably are already feeling a bit of stress, or are reveling in the challenge of life's changes and shifting. (These degrees are within a one degree orb of where Mars opposite Pluto sits.)
Although there have been many disruptive events since Mars stationed retrograde, especially several governments overthrown and falling apart (see list at end of this section), the periods to especially watch when there will be tension and strife in the air, regardless of where transiting Mars falls in your chart, will be from about December 29-January 6, which is when Mars and Pluto are close enough in degrees opposite each other to cause havoc, even though it is exact on January 3rd. In the last days of December alone, there was a plane crash in Kazakhstan (this occurred on December 25), plane crash in South Korea and the death of Jimmy Carter (both on December 29) and as I write this I am listening to news reports about a horrible attack into a crowd in New Orleans in the early morning of New Years Day, much like the incident in Germany when someone ran his car into a crowd at a Christmas market. Be mindful of the fact that while the positive side of this transit can be transformational for you, the downside is that it could bring storms, fires, explosions, violence, all both figuratively and literally.
Since 1900 Mars has only formed an opposition to Pluto that occurred three times due to Mars retrograde twice before: The first time was in 1939 on May 23 1939, July 18, 1939 and September 30, 1939 and Mars was retrograde between June 22-August 23, 1939. This corresponded with Hitler amassing more power ultimately resulting in Germany invading Poland heralding the beginning of World War II.
The second time was in 2007-2008, on September 21, 2007, January 2, 2008, and March 7, 2008 and Mars was retrograde between November 15, 2007-January 30, 2008. This was exactly during the time that the global financial crisis began.
This is not to say that history will repeat itself exactly, but the Mars-Pluto opposition three times, amidst a Mars Retrograde between December 6, 2024-February 24, 2025 could indicate a crisis in the world that has been brewing whether it is war, financial instability, governmental changes throughout the world, meteorological changes or something else that we can ponder.
Since Mars stationed retrograde, we have seen Syria’s government overthrown, South Korea’s president impeached and awaiting trial, the German coalition falling apart with a new election underway, and the top minister in France resigning. Governments are unstable and perhaps there will be more. This of course is in addition to the wars still taking place in Gaza, and in the Ukraine. Our own government is changing in the coming weeks as well, with proposals of policy changes that can affect the direction of the United States as well. And wars continue to rage in Sudan, Gaza and Ukraine.
We have also seen the murder of United Health Care CEO become a national story, with the alleged murderer becoming a folk hero, and revelations and talks about our health care system coming into focus. There was the Madison WI school shooting, a truck plowing into a Christmas market in Germany killing and injuring many people, and as I write this I am listening to the news about a truck barreling into people celebrating New Year’s Eve on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. While we live in a world of violence, and government instability, these incidents happened within a very short span of time, after December 6th in addition to the plane crashes and death of Jimmy Carter, which I already mentioned. Whew!!! (If you want to read more you can go to Wikipedia and search for 2024, and now 2025, where events are listed, since I am sure I left some out.)
Keep cool and stay focused. As long as we create positive thoughts around us, and do not give in to that type of negativity, we can achieve great things during these times.
Sun opposite Mars. The next period to watch out for is when the Sun and Mars are exactly opposite each other on January 16, which occurs when Mars retrograde is closest to the earth and is midway through the retrograde cycle. That opposition will be within orb of exactness between January 14-18, 2025, and could be the most intense part of Mars retrograde, since after the 16th, Mars moves away from the earth and starts to regain its speed until it stations direct on February 24, 2025. That aspect occurs at Tropical. 26° Capricorn-Cancer 12’; Sidereal. 2° Capricorn-Cancer 6’. If you have a planet, point, or angle between tropical 25-27 degrees Capricorn, Cancer, Aries, Libra or sidereal 1-3 degrees Capricorn, Cancer, Aries, Libra, you might feel a bit of stress or disruption between January 14-18, 2025 when that aspect is in orb. Again, if you take deep breaths, and do not overreact, or react at all to someone else's anger, then you will already be one step ahead of the game. Always under these transits, put your energy into physical activity, or any project you are currently involved in. Focus on anything other than giving in to stress. Everyone has their own way of dealing with tension, and whatever you discover works for yourself, is something you should always remember to do.
