Welcome to 2025!
I hope you have all had a joyful holiday season.
The year is off to a fast start. Spring semester classes are in place and registration is open. If you have not yet reviewed our offerings, please visit our webpage where you will find all 68 class descriptions, dates and times, as well as the Spring 2025 registration form.

|
From Arts and Culture through Science and Writing, and everything in between, I am certain there is something for everyone.
Class enrollment will occur on Jan 13th, so please make sure that you have submitted your registration form either online or via mail before then. All forms which are in our office by Jan 10th, no matter when it arrived, will be randomly processed until classes are filled. We will do our best to accommodate all requests, but please fill out the bottom of the form where we ask for a second choice in the event that a class fills early.
Meanwhile here at home, on our spectacular arm of sand, life is good. But elsewhere trouble is afoot, and ALL is somewhat responsible for my knowing this. Why? Because ALL entreats me to learn new things – to explore, and engage, with people and situations and ideas outside of my comfortable life. Still, I would rather know about something disturbing than not, because there may be something I could do about it. I believe this is why any of us want to know what is going on, and why we all need ALL.
Okay, I’m back to my registration form, and thinking about what I want to learn next. Certainly, I will continue my education in square dancing. I had no idea how much fun it could be. But what else? Theatre? Music? Current Events? History? Literature? Try my hand at writing? Improve my chess game? Maybe fishing! Whatever I pick, it will be fun. Now if I could just remember everything that I learned last semester …
Do you have an idea for a new class that you would like to take? Share it with Henry Tamzarian (htamzari@smith.edu) or me (pcoteus@gmail.com); perhaps we can find someone to teach it. Do you have a special interest or expertise you would like to share with others? Send an email to Henry and he will start a discussion with you about being a coordinator.
Are you looking to get just a little more involved in something? Please take a look at the article on board membership. Consider joining our board, or one of our standing committees.
Looking forward to seeing all of you at the start of classes.

Meet ALL Coordinator Linda Monchik
This is one of a series of articles featuring ALL courses and ALL coordinators. Please let us know if there is a course or coordinator you would like to know more about.
| |
|
Linda recently taught a fall 2024 course on storytelling. She also coordinated a Zoom course of poetry at ALL for two years during the Covid outage.
She has a bachelor’s degree from Smith College; a master’s degree from Columbia Teachers College; and a master’s degree in Theatre from Emerson.
She has been producing, performing and directing on the South Coast and Cape Cod for 30 years. Most recently, she performed the one-woman shows, “An Hour with Eleanor” and “Rose” in Cotuit and Marion, and was also in “Ripcord” in Barnstable.

I grew up in Taunton, Mass. and always wanted to be a chorus girl. My mother took me to Cape Cod Melody Tent when I was little and I fell in love. I remember the moment in High Button Shoes, when the lead actor threw open the window, strode over the casement and stepped into the living room. I was hooked. I have been stepping onto stages ever since. I grew up dancing, singing, playing instruments and graduated from Smith College, later earning a master's from Columbia in Teaching.
I was a community leader in the Fall River schools, at our Temple, and Southcoast hospital and realized I needed to improve my voice. After my three girls grew up, I took a voice class at nearby Brown University with a renowned actor, and I was on my way! For the past 30 years I have performed in over 100 productions throughout New England, with leads in most plays. I earned a master's degree in theatre from Emerson, studied at Shakespeare & Co. and toured my one-person shows of strong women, such as: Emily Dickenson, Golda Meir and Rose Kennedy.
For 15 years I taught Public Speaking at Bristol Community College where my students began to trust their voices and share their stories. I learned that the best stories come from the heart.
Seven years ago my husband, Jerry, a retired general surgeon, and I moved to Cape Cod. We were drawn to the flourishing arts communities and endless coastal nature walks here. ALL was a pleasant surprise. We have been thrilled with both the coordinators and classmates who are erudite, passionate and inspiring. The comradery and opportunities for friendships that come from in-person classes is wonderful.
ALL is full of storytelling, whether it be in the form of history, religion or chemistry. Last fall I coordinated a small but lively Storytelling class. I am planning on leading another one next fall, Telling Tales. We all have many stories to share.
I like to think that these years are the best of years – time to remember our pasts and create our futures.

Kickstart Your 2025: A Guide to Positive Habits
Peggy Crawford and her husband moved to Cape Cod from Boston two years ago. Shortly after her arrival she joined ALL.
Peggy has a keen interest in African Violets and has grown them for over 40 years.
As a result of her husband's cardiac issues, she also has a keen interest in healthy living. She and her husband are members of the Cape Cod Chapter of Mended Hearts, an organzation that functions as a support group for individuals suffering from heart disease.
Her "jumpstart" checklist for 2025 is offered as a resource for the New Year.

Kickstart for Healthy Living in 2025
As the calendar flips to a new year, many of us resolve to make positive changes in our lives. But how can we ensure these resolutions stick? The key lies in establishing healthy habits that are both enjoyable and sustainable.
1. Embrace Creative Play
-
Why it matters: Creative play sparks imagination, reduces stress, and boosts cognitive function.
- How to start:
-
Art therapy: Experiment with painting, drawing, or sculpting.
-
Music: Learn an instrument, sing, or simply listen to music that inspires you.
-
Writing: Keep a journal, write poetry, or try creative writing prompts.
2. Connect with Nature
-
Why it matters: Spending time outdoors can improve mental health, reduce anxiety, and boost energy levels.
- How to start:
-
Go for a walk: A simple walk in nature can do wonders for your mood.
-
Hike or bike: Explore local trails and parks.
-
Garden: Cultivate your green thumb and connect with the earth.
3. Prioritize Mindful Movement
-
Why it matters: Regular physical activity benefits both physical and mental health.
- How to start:
-
Yoga: Improve flexibility, strength, and mindfulness.
-
Tai Chi: Enhance balance, coordination, and reduce stress.
-
Dancing: A fun way to get moving and express yourself.
4. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation
-
Why it matters: Mindfulness helps reduce stress, increase focus, and improve overall well-being.
- How to start:
-
Meditation: Sit quietly and focus on your breath.
-
Mindful eating: Pay attention to the taste, smell, and texture of your food.
-
Mindful walking: Focus on your senses as you walk.
5. Cultivate Gratitude
-
Why it matters: Gratitude can increase happiness, improve relationships, and reduce stress.
- How to start:
-
Gratitude journal: Write down things you're grateful for each day.
-
Express gratitude to others: Let people know you appreciate them.
6. Set Realistic Goals
-
Why it matters: Setting achievable goals can help you stay motivated and focused.
- How to start:
-
Break down big goals: Divide them into smaller, manageable steps.
-
Track your progress: Use a planner or app to monitor your achievements.
-
Celebrate your successes: Reward yourself for reaching milestones.
Remember, small steps can lead to big changes. By incorporating these positive habits into your daily routine, you can start 2025 on the right foot.
