Life has a funny way of teaching us lessons, doesn’t it?
For months, I’d been looking forward to retreating to the Sea of Cortez in Mexico to finish editing my soon-to-be-released book, Traumatized: A Love Story. My bags were packed with everything I’d need—books, supplies, and enough dog treats for Buddha to last the trip.
Then, life intervened...
| |
|
On Christmas Eve, Buddha got into a tussle with another dog, and when I jumped in to break it up, I broke my hand. No big deal, I thought. A splint would do the trick, and I’d still make the three-day drive south. But just before leaving, my doctor looked at the X-rays and said, “Nope. You need a cast.”
I left the office with a bright blue monstrosity from my elbow to my fingertips, making me feel like I was lugging around a bowling ball on the end of my arm. Determined, I hit the road anyway.
| |
|
I made it as far as Los Angeles before reality set in. Between not being able to unzip my pants to pee or pull my wallet from my pocket, I realized this trip wasn’t going to happen. Over dinner with my daughter, I made the difficult but correct decision to turn around and head home.
Back in Grass Valley, the universe decided to double down. I came down with the worst cold of my life, making COVID-19 look like a day at the spa. For three weeks, I’ve been in bed, humbled, and learning yet another lesson about slowing down.
| |
|
In the stillness, I witnessed a familiar pattern: even at almost 80 years old, I still find myself chasing my father's approval, seeking to prove I am worthy of love and life itself. After all these years, these deeply ingrained patterns still emerge, but in noticing them, I reclaim the power to let them go. It’s a reminder that awareness is the first step toward liberation.

"We are wounded in community, and we are healed in community. Healing might not come from the community where the wounding occurred, but the community is needed for healing nonetheless."

Do not let the behaviors of others
destroy your inner peace.
Dali Lama
Like many of you, I'm scared of what the future holds. That fear is not something to get rid of, it is something to embrace, explore, and befriend. Fear heightens our senses, focuses our attention, and reveals the areas where we are not peaceful within ourselves. The solution to peace is to become aware of our inner unrest and turmoil.

Peace is not something you must hope for in the future. Instead, it is a deepening of the present; unless you look for it in the present you will never find it.

Real intimacy is a sacred experience. It never exposes its secret trust and belonging to the voyeuristic eye of a neon culture. Real intimacy is of the soul, and the soul is reserved.

Very little grows on jagged rock.
Be ground. Be crumbled.
So wildflowers will come up
where you are.
You have been stoney for too many years.
Try something different.
Surrender.
by Rumi
The Journey
One day, you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice –
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do –
determined to save
the only life you could save.
