JANUARY 2025

Happy New Year!

Visit New Horizons today!

Frank Sinatra - My Way - live at Madison Square Garden, 1974.

Hello 2025!

As John Lennon said:

...

Another year over

And a new one just begun

...

Let's hope it's a good one

Without any fear

...

[That is an extract from the song "HAPPY XMAS (WAR IS OVER)." Here is a lovely version to listen to and to watch: John & Yoko Plastic Ono Band with the Harlem Community Choir]

Let us all hope that 2025 is a good year for each and every one of us. Of course, there is much that we cannot control about the future — but one thing that we do have control over is our attitude. Here are links to three very different stories of individuals who face the present with equanimity and the future with gusto. You can listen to two of the stories and read all three. I hope you enjoy them:

Sharp and curious, my 85-year-old neighbour wades into conversations with a joyful openness (by Nova Weetman)

—

Maria Pappas is the treasurer of Cook County, Illinois, the second-largest county in America. She is 75, has a "bucket list" and is "... going to live today to the fullest."

"I love it. That's what I do. It... keeps me on my toes and keeps my fingers moving... - you know, it's a learning process, even though you're getting to be around 80. You know, believe me. It don't stop."

— Keith Richards

Each of those stories is very different, but each also shares some common themes about being authentic and true to ourselves. As the interviewer asks Keith Richards: "You never look at each other and say, you know, we really could just put our feet up and sit under the sun in Monaco or something?" And Mr. Richards, who can afford to live out the rest of his days sitting in the sunshine in Monaco, states that would only be okay but only for a little while, because he and his bandmates are performers at heart:

"This is what we love."

I want to suggest that now is a good time to reflect on the past and to look forward to the future — and why not do so while spending time with us at the Center. 2025 is going to be a big and exciting year for New Horizons. It marks our 49th year of existence. We are starting the year with a busy calendar — and it will get busier as the year goes on. On behalf of the entire New Horizons team I want to invite you to join us and share our journey in the new year.

Please visit the Center this month — and throughout 2025. We have much to offer and your participation helps make New Horizons your community center.

New Horizons is here for you!

Keep reading below and also refer to our calendar and website for everything going on at New Horizons in January. Remember that we will always try to welcome you via Zoom If you are unable to attend in person (if we are able — unfortunately, not every program or activity works well online).

Finally, our annual appeal [click here] is still going on. Your generosity allows us to offer our many programs and services and the meals that we share with our community, as well as to create the warm, welcoming environment that is New Horizons.

Thank you! Happy New Year!
