Prevention of Cargo Theft: Toolkit Available

Cargo theft, particularly of shipments containing recycled materials such as copper, is a growing concern in our industry. To help combat this issue, ReMA offers a comprehensive Prevention of Cargo Theft Toolkit.

This resource provides actionable strategies to secure your shipments, including:

  • Preloading Protocols: Ensure proper driver identification and validate vehicle information.
  • Insurance Coverage Tips: Confirm adequate insurance for high-value loads.
  • Enhanced Security for Storage Lots: Use kingpin locks, surveillance cameras, and proper lighting.
  • Immediate Actions for Irregularities: Trust your instincts, track shipments with GPS, and notify local authorities when issues arise.

Quote from the Toolkit: "If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t!"

General Counsel Report

Peter Durning - Verrill Law

In 2025, while the economy may improve scrap markets, challenges could arise from President-elect Trump's tariffs and global shifts. Domestic recyclers must be vigilant about potential increases in citizen-suit enforcement under the Clean Water Act (CWA), particularly in New England. With changes in EPA oversight, staying on top of permit requirements, monitoring discharge reports, and addressing issues quickly is crucial to avoid costly legal battles.
