Advances in technology have led to new power-driven devices, not specifically designed for people with disabilities, but used by some for mobility. The ADA refers to these as “other power-driven mobility devices,” which include any battery, fuel, or engine-powered device used for movement, like Segways® and golf carts, even if they’re not made for people with mobility impairments.
Public places must allow people with disabilities to use these devices, unless a legitimate safety concern can be proven. Safety concerns must be based on real risks, not assumptions about the devices or how individuals will use them.
