EVENTS, PERFORMANCES, AND FILMS

The George Street Playhouse presents Small, January 14 to February 2. From the racetrack to the stage, Robert Montano shares his extraordinary true story of resilience and reinvention through the highs and lows of an unconventional life. Once a jockey grappling with the pressures and struggles to stay “SMALL,” Montano overcame immense odds to pursue a new passion: professional dance.


The State Theatre New Jersey presents the first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping, Step Afrika!, blending percussive dance styles, traditional African dances, and contemporary dance and art forms into a powerful artistic experience, on January 17. Much more than a dance show, Step Afrika! also integrates songs, storytelling, humor, and audience participation.


On January 18, be transported back to a time when freestyle music dominated the dance clubs and the Billboard charts. The Freestyle Flashback concert event at the State Theatre New Jersey features some of the best dance-pop and freestyle artists of the 80s and 90s.


A comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family, The Addams Family is the magnificently macabre hit musical featuring everyone’s favorite creepy, kooky characters, January 24-26 at the State Theatre New Jersey.


The New Jersey Film Festival will run on select Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from January 24 to February 2, in a hybrid format presenting film screenings online as well as in-person on the Voorhees Hall on the Rutgers' College Avenue campus.


The Rutgers Geology Museum's 57th Open House on January 25 will feature a mineral sale, children's activities, lectures, Schanck Oberservatory tours, and more. Presentations and activities take place in Scott Hall, College Avenue Campus. Free.


The Heldrich Craft Beer and Spirit Festival returns on February 1 at the Heldrich Hotel. Enjoy a night filled with food, drinks, live music from the Blaire Reinhard Band, raffle prizes, and more, while supporting Elijah's Promise.


Join the Zimmerli Art Museum to celebrate a new season, including the unprecedented exhibition Indigenous Identities: Here, Now & Always, featuring 97 artists and more than 100 works on February 1. Free.

LECTURES, PRESENTATIONS, WEBINARS

The Bee-ginner's Beekeeping: The Basics of Apiculture course is available online for self-paced learning from January 13-February 9, requiring approximately 14 hours to complete. Participants also have the option to join a live Q&A session with instructors to discuss course content and ask questions.  


In 2025, the Rutgers Center for Public Health Workforce Development will offer more than 100 courses covering various occupational safety and health topics, including Asbestos and Lead, Hearing Conservation, Hazardous Waste, Spirometry, OSHA Outreach Trainer, and Respiratory Protection. Courses will be available in online, in-person, and hybrid formats catering to diverse learning preferences.


Registration is now open for the Winter 2025 session at the Rutgers Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI-RU). Whether in-person or online, OLLI-RU offers individuals 50 and older the chance to explore new subjects, expand their horizons, and meet new friends in a stimulating, informal environment. With no tests or grades, OLLI-RU provides noncredit courses that are designed to be engaging and fun.


On January 30, New Brunswick Free Public Library invites you to join Sangretta Sinha, a long-time meditator, to learn a simple meditation technique to help you start the new year. Offered via Zoom. Free.

FOR KIDS

George Street Playhouse (GSP) youth classes begin January 11. GSP's Acting Studio focuses on building skills in acting, singing, and dance/movement, with expert guidance from professionals who have worked on Broadway, in film, and TV. Students also gain valuable audition skills as part of their training.


The Rutgers Geology Museum's 57th Open House on January 25 features a mineral sale, lectures, Schanck Observatory tours, and more. Kids age 8+ can join the museum staff as they lead them through various earth science-based hands-on activities. No registration is required, but we suggest you come early as spots fill up fast. Free.


There’s something for everyone in the Rutgers Recreation Kids Learn to Swim program for Spring 2025. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors teach a variety of skills and strokes, including front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly for children from 6 months to 17 years.

SPORTS AND RECREATION

The 2024-25 Rutgers Basketball season is in full swing with Big Ten action. See the Rutgers Women’s Basketball team at Jersey Mike's Arena on January 12 (Nebraska), January 15 (Michigan State), January 23 (UCLA), and January 30 (Illinois). The Rutgers Men's Basketball team hosts opponents on January 9 (Purdue), January 13 (UCLA), and February 1 (Michigan).


Rutgers Wrestling continues their home season with Big Ten matches at Jersey Mike's Arena on January 19 (Wisconsin), January 24 (Penn State), and January 26 (Illinois).

SCIENCE AND NATURE

Observe the night sky through a 20-inch optical telescope at the Robert A. Schommer Astronomical Observatory on Rutgers' Busch Campus. Public open viewing nights are scheduled for January 9, 16, and 23, weather permitting. Free.


Immerse yourself in nature at the Rutgers Ecological Preserve and Natural Teaching Area, a 360-acre wooded preserve between the Busch and Livingston campuses in Piscataway. Free.

AROUND TOWN

Members of the public can provide input about a proposed overhaul of East Jersey Old Town Village at a public meeting held at the Middlesex County Commissioner's Meeting Room at 75 Bayard St., New Brunswick, on January 16. Proposed improvements include an orientation building, exhibit/interpretive hall, expanded parking and improved accessibility.


The New Brunswick Department of Human and Community Services invites you to participate in their Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on January 20 at the Hub Center at 411 Joyce Kilmer Avenue. Activities will include preparing and bagging lunches, community conversations, assembling hygiene kits, and networking opportunities. The New Brunswick Department of Human and Community Services will also be hosting a coat drive to collect new or gently used coats. Drop-off locations are Civic Square, 25 Kirkpatrick Street, and The Dignity Center, Memorial Stadium, Joyce Kilmer Avenue.


The Dinner Ministry at the United Methodist Church of New Brunswick is seeking new volunteers, particularly on weekends, to help prepare and serve meals. In addition, the ministry is collecting donations of new or gently used coats, gloves, beanies, and shoes through January. Donations can be dropped off on Mondays.
