A delegation of students and representatives from SVCC had the incredible opportunity to meet with legislators at the Virginia General Assembly. Students in attendance were Nakiera Wiggins, Emily Dalton, Kadin Shaw, May Levonian, Maxi Alvarez, Erika Davis, and Emily Sansalone. Students were able to share their SVCC story with Senator Mulchi, Delegate Wachsmann,
Dr. David Doré, and Legislative Assistant to Delegate Tommy Wright, Kade Gravitt.

VCCS Legislative Reception | |
The VCCS Legislative Reception held in Richmond showcased the impactful work that all 23 community colleges are doing to help prepare Virginians for successful careers in the Commonwealth. In attendance was Governor of Virginia Glenn Youngkin, VCCS Chancellor Dr. David Dore', college presidents and leadership staff, Virginia lawmakers, friends, colleagues and students. The reception was sponsored by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education. | |

Campus Within Walls Program

Amanda Cox, SVCC's Campus Within Walls Coordinator, and Colleen Pendry, who works with Higher Education Programs for Justice-Impacted Individuals at the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), recently visited with legislators advocating for Campus Within Walls student populations. They were able to meet with Legislative Assistant to Delegate Hillary Kent, Dexter Lewis. Cox and Pendry were invited by the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy. While in attendance, they helped facilitate a workshop on Higher Education in Prison to the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy. Cox was one of 400 people in attendance at "Day for All People". | | |
The Financial Aid Department was recognized at our January Local Board Meeting for their remarkable achievements and exceptional contributions to the SVCC Financial Aid Department. The department continually ranks at the top in the VCCS for processing. Each recipient was awarded a certificate of recognition by Dr. Ronald Thornhill, SVCC Local Board Chair, Dr. Quentin R. Johnson, SVCC President, and Dr. Daryl Minus, Vice President, Enrollment Management & Student Success. | |

Fresh Start, New Semester | |
The spring semester was delayed with winter weather. The snow-covered grounds and cold temperatures may have caused a delayed start, but the learning quickly heated up as students jumped right in with hands-on demonstrations. Classes featured in the photos are Information Technology, Biology, Nursing and Fiber Technician. | |

Students shown above recently completed the Fiber Technician Class located at the Occupational Technical Center in Blackstone. Students have learned how to install, test, and troubleshoot components. The first cohort concluded on Friday, January 31. Students are now skilled to install, splice, test and maintain "Fiber to the Home"(FTTH) and "Fiber to the Building" (FTTB) systems.
