“House I”, Roy Lichtenstein
National Gallery of Art, Side & Front View
| | |
Nestled on the lawn of the National Gallery of Art is a sculpture aptly titled “House I” by an artist named Roy Lichtenstein, best known for his pop art paintings. The sculpture caught my attention on a recent trip to DC for its optical illusion qualities.
From the side, the sculpture is disarming, fragmented, almost jarring: three separate pieces, with one side of the house appearing to lean towards the viewer while another simultaneously recedes. Magically, if you look at the sculpture head on, or better yet take a photo of it, suddenly it’s a 3-D house in perfect symmetry, proportion, and optical perfection.
I reflect on this sculpture as a new year dawns on KHRC and Kansas. The Legislature will be convening shortly, making difficult policy decisions and prioritizing resources. Kansans across our state, in rural and urban areas alike, yearn for more housing supply, affordability, and help closing the gap to develop and rehab homes for their families, communities and jobs.
In concert with our Legislature and the Administration, KHRC and our stakeholders have made amazing headway addressing our state’s housing challenges these past three years. We can’t stop now, can’t allow our progress to be an optical illusion, disjointed and fragmented like this National Gallery of Art sculpture. Unlocking Home requires an ongoing commitment, sustained resources and certainty for those planning and ultimately building our homes for tomorrow.
It’s a new year, a new opportunity. Let’s continue our progress, leaving the optical illusions to the sculpture gardens, celebrating our continued progress Unlocking Home for Kansans for generations to come.
