COMMUNITY NEWS & INFO

History Revived and Archives Begin

We're excited to share that a new video slideshow is now live in the vestibule at Killiney Beach Hall, celebrating the rich history of the North Westside. Featuring photos dating from 1901 to today, the nonstop slideshow honors the Killiney Beach Senior Group and the many community members who helped build the amenities we enjoy today.

Building on this positive momentum we’re excited to announce the launch of a Community History Program. This next phase is all about growing our shared story—and we need your help. Check out our Blog to learn more.

GOOD WORKS

NWCA Good Works Segment

Each month, we recognize a group, neighbor, or individual who has made a meaningful difference in our community. This may include a volunteer, charity, business, fundraiser, or activity that helps keep the Westside special. To nominate someone for recognition, please email us at eventsnwca@gmail.com

La Casa Market & Kitchen – Ryan Hargreaves

Every community needs a hub, and Ryan Hargreaves has made La Casa Market & Kitchen just that—a welcoming place to gather, eat, and connect.

His generous sponsorships have been vital to the success of NWCA events and Westside youth sports. He is a steadfast supporter of the annual NWFR fundraiser and our local dirt biking community. Ryan’s positivity and generosity make a lasting impact, and La Casa Market is always a great place to run into friends.

Thank you to Ryan and the La Casa team for all you do for our community.

Beverly Phillips Lundgren

Born and raised on a farm in Saskatchewan, Beverly moved to Edmonton to take a broadcasting course. Her passion for creating and writing commercials were compromised by her gender as at that time women were not afforded the opportunity to serve in this media capacity so she swerved her career into optometry first starting as an optometric assistant.

Soon, she became an optician, a contact lens specialist, and then did some training as an ophthalmic assistant.

Raising two children at that same time she felt fulfilled. As they grew, she realized that she still had more to offer so she contacted medical ministry international and offered her ophthalmic services in developing countries. Beverly and her husband Lawrence generally take two week trips at a time to different countries - Beverly fitting used eyeglasses and doing optics and Lawrence fitting artificial eyes. To date they have travelled to 13 different countries trying to make a difference in people's lives with improved eyesight and over 43 trips.

Beverly has a wealth of volunteering experience having volunteered with Samaritan’s purse in Calgary for operation Christmas Child and been involved with the Lions glasses recycle program in Calgary.

Locally Beverly serves on the Board of the North Westside Seniors Association and has done so over the past 6 years. Beverly is the creator of the Salt and Light program through the North Westside Fellowship Church seven years ago, serving the community a free meal once a month.

She spends lots of her time now looking for fund raising opportunities selling plants and crafts at various markets, garage sales and yard sales so that she and her husband, Lawrence can continue their good works in eye care abroad.

Beverly is also a published author of a children's book called Harold The Goose Finds his Family, which is also a fundraising endeavour.

RECENT EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

A Traditional Christmas Dinner

The Killiney Beach Seniors Association hosted a traditional Christmas dinner on Dec 6th, coinciding with St. Nicholas Day. St Nicholas Day is commonly known to honor the 4th-century Bishop of Myra. This holiday celebrates his legacy of secret gift-giving and charity.

The Annual Dinner was traditional in every way with heart felt moments of music, storytelling, and entertainment by Josh Groban and Charlotte Church and the Little Drummer Boy.

The dinner, prepared by community members, was filled with love and culinary experience. From the turkey, stuffing and all the fixings, to the Christmas Cream cake, no one left hungry.

Santa made a surprise appearance and yes, it is good to know that at any age, you might just get a lump of coal. Lots of laughs and community spirit.

The Seniors host 4 dinners a year as a part of their direct fund raising efforts to support the NWCA with some hall rental revenue. All ages are invited to their dinners. The next one will be in the spring and as Pavel Siska says with a smile, "All are invited to attend from 1 year old to over 100 years old. This is not exclusively a seniors event."

Come support your senior community members and give them a hug.

You might win the 50/50 or a door prize at the same time.

2026 SANTA MEET AND GREET

The Annual Santa Meet and Greet took place on Saturday, December 13th, at Killiney Beach Hall. Over 60 children had the joy of meeting Santa and Mrs. Claus, receiving gifts, creating painted wreaths, creating Christmas cards for loved ones and capturing annual photos with Santa.

Many heartfelt thanks to Katelyn Wingrove of Kate's Lens for her outstanding work in capturing all the unforgettable moments with family portraits. Fabi Canada treated everyone with delightful Christmas sugar cookies that were thoroughly enjoyed. Kathy Solmundson contributed her creativity to set up a lovely holiday atmosphere complete with crafts, games, and story time areas.

Ladies, your generous gifts of time and talent are truly appreciated.

This event could not have happened without the support from all the donations and the 50/50 games held throughout 2025. A big thank you to our local business leaders, volunteers, and ticket purchasers for making community events like this one possible for our local children.

A special shout-out of appreciation and gratitude to our incredible Santa, Fred Wade, and his lovely Mrs. Claus, Nancy Wade. You both made the day exceptionally special for all the kids, adults and doggies.

NWCA 1st Annual SANTA PAWS was a howling success. Many good pups visited the Hall with their loving and very responsible owners.

Our rookie last minute photographer cracked the code to getting a good family picture! - a howl can go a long way to getting a dog's attention.

NWCA 2025 CHRISTMAS AFFAIR AND GIFT MARKET was well attended and supported by residents. Hosted at the Killiney Beach Hall, even Santa made an appearance for all of the adult boys and girls. Thank you to everyone who supported the marketers with love and $$$'s.
