SERVICE SPOTLIGHT

The Twelve Concepts and

Our Shared Service Work

The Twelve Concepts help explain how service in AA works — who makes decisions, how responsibility is shared, and how trusted servants support the Fellowship.

They remind us that AA belongs to the groups. Service bodies exist to help groups, not to direct them, and group conscience keeps everything connected and accountable.

Throughout 2026, we’ll look at one Concept each month to better understand how our service structure works and how every group plays a part.

Concept I

Final responsibility and ultimate authority for A.A. world services should always reside in the collective conscience of our whole Fellowship.”

Concept I reminds us that the groups are the heart of AA. Authority doesn’t rest with one person or committee — it lives in the shared conscience of the Fellowship.

Service boards and trusted servants do important work, but always on behalf of the groups they serve. When groups stay involved, AA stays healthy, unified, and available.

Concept I reminds us that AA belongs to the groups.

When groups stay involved, service stays healthy — and the message keeps reaching those who need it.

Steps, Traditions & Concepts of AA

Step 1: "We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable."

Tradition 1: " Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon A.A. unity."

Concept 1: "Final responsibility and ultimate authority for A.A. world services should always reside in the collective conscience of our whole Fellowship."

Message From The Editor

Hey friends,

January doesn’t ask us to reinvent ourselves. It just asks us to keep showing up.

AA works the same way it always has — one day at a time, imperfect people, shared responsibility. No resolutions required.

Just willingness, honesty, and a little patience with ourselves and each other.

Service doesn’t have to be heavy to be meaningful. When we stay connected and keep it simple, the work gets done — and nobody has to do it alone.

If you’ve got announcements, stories, or fun ideas, send them my way:

Grateful to be of service,

Barbara 💜🦋
