JANUARY 2026

A Message from the President: Toward the Beloved Community

Happy New Year, Fairfax County!

As we enter 2026, I am filled with a sense of renewed purpose. The start of a new year is often a time for personal resolutions, but for the NAACP Fairfax Branch, it is a time to reaffirm our collective commitment to the fight for civil rights. We look ahead with the "fierce urgency of now," knowing that our work is essential to ensuring that every resident of our country regardless of race or background can thrive.

Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This January, as we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we are reminded that his dream was not a static one. It was an active, breathing call to dismantle systemic injustice. Dr. King spoke of the "Beloved Community" not as a place free of conflict, but as a society committed to justice and the shared dignity of all people.

In Fairfax County, we honor him best not through words alone, but through our continued advocacy. We follow his lead by speaking truth to power and organizing for the structural changes that bring us closer to that vision.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny."

 — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Our Advocacy: The Work Ahead in 2026

This year, our branch is doubling down on the systemic issues that continue to impact the Black community and other disenfranchised groups across our county. Our 2026 Advocacy Agenda is focused on several critical pillars:

  • Educational Equity: We are continuing our push for transparent data and measurable plans to improve literacy for students of color and economically disadvantaged students in FCPS. We remain steadfast in advocating for the hiring and retention of Black teachers to ensure our classrooms reflect our community.
  • Criminal Justice Reform: We are working closely with the Commonwealth’s Attorney and local law enforcement to ensure fairer plea bargaining and sentencing practices. Additionally, we are planning Expungement Clinics to help our neighbors remove barriers to employment and housing caused by past records.
  • Housing Justice: With the rise of displacement and gentrification, we are fighting to protect renters’ rights and increase Black homeownership. We are demanding that the County recognize housing as a fundamental human right, especially for our neighbors experiencing homelessness.
  • Economic Empowerment: Through our "Regenerative Economy" initiatives, we are supporting Black-owned businesses and pushing for diversity and inclusion in county procurement and hiring.

Join Us in the Fight

Our strength lies in our membership. On Tuesday, January 20, we will host our 2026 Advocacy Agenda Rollout at the Gum Springs Community Center. I invite you to join us to learn how you can lend your voice to these efforts. More information can be found below.

Together, let us make 2026 a year of transformative progress.

Forward Together,

Niki Zimmerman

2025 Branch Accomplishments & Year-End Summary

As we enter 2026, Fairfax County NAACP takes a moment to reflect on a year of advocacy, service, and steady progress across our community.

Throughout 2025, the branch focused on its core priorities through civic engagement efforts such as voter education, election preparedness, and community mobilization. Our work in education, housing, economic justice, and criminal justice remained centered on equity, access, and accountability.

We also stayed closely connected to the community through service initiatives, public programs, and branch-hosted events that created space for conversation, learning, and collective action. These moments reminded us of the importance of showing up consistently and listening to the needs of those we serve.

The progress made this year was possible because of the dedication of our branch leadership, committee chairs, volunteers, members, and supporters. Your commitment continues to move this work forward.

As we move into 2026, we do so with gratitude for what has been accomplished and a continued commitment to advancing civil rights and equity throughout Fairfax County.

The Tougaloo Nine: The Jackson Library Sit-In at the Crossroads of Civil War and Civil Rights, by Mike O'Brien

Some of you may know that our very own Secretary Mike O’Brien is an author of civil rights histories. We profiled his first book We Shall Not Be Moved: The Jackson Woolworth’s Sit-In and the Movement It Inspired during our summer author series. Mike’s new book is just out and it’s making a splash. The Tougaloo Nine: The Jackson Library Sit-In at the Crossroads of Civil War and Civil Rights was released in November 2025 and has already been named by the Mississippi Historical Society as its “2025 Book of the Year”. It tells the fascinating story of the first student-led civil rights demonstration in the state of Mississippi in 1961, and how it intersected with the state’s celebration of its Confederate heritage on the 100th anniversary of its secession from the Union—a powerful tale that brought the full force of the national NAACP in to support the students and the state’s NAACP field secretary, the legendary Medgar Evers.

The first leg of the new book tour comes to Fairfax County’s Tysons/Pimmit Library on Saturday, February 7 (3:00 – 4:30 pm), just in time for Black History Month. Visit https://www.upress.state.ms.us/Books/T/The-Tougaloo-Nine for more information about the book and how to obtain a copy.

For more information about the book talk at Tysons/Pimmit, visit https://librarycalendar.fairfaxcounty.gov/event/15818280. Registration for the event, which is suggested but not required, opens on January 17. Books will be on sale during the event and Mike will be signing books afterwards.
