Happy New Year, District K!

As we step into 2026, I want to thank you for the spirit, strength, and heart you continue to bring to our community. Every new year gives us a fresh opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come and to dream about where we are going together. Because of you, District K continues to be a place where neighbors look out for one another and where progress is built with care and purpose.

This January, we are starting the year with momentum. From new investments in sidewalks and neighborhood infrastructure, to expanded access to arts and after school programs, to continued efforts to improve safety and quality of life, we are moving forward with you in mind. I am especially proud to celebrate the opening of the Edison Cultural Arts Center, a space that turns a once abandoned property into a vibrant hub for creativity, youth, and community. This is exactly what reinvestment should look like in our neighborhoods.

We are also continuing to focus on the everyday needs that matter most to families. Whether it is keeping our streets clean, improving walkability, supporting seniors, or making sure residents have access to housing and essential services, my team and I remain committed to being present, responsive, and solutions focused.

I want to thank our civic clubs, faith leaders, small businesses, volunteers, and community partners who show up every day for District K. You are the backbone of this community, and I am grateful for your partnership as we work to build a safer, stronger, and more connected district.

As always, please stay engaged, attend meetings when you can, share your concerns, and keep reaching out to our office. We are here to serve you, and together we will continue to make District K a place we are all proud to call home.

Wishing you and your family a healthy, hopeful, and joyful start to the new year.

New Short Term Rental Ordinance is Live

Houston’s new Short Term Rental Ordinance officially went into effect on January 1, 2026, and it brings new tools to help residents better understand where short term rentals are operating in their neighborhoods.

One important update is the launch of the Short Term Rental Registration Map, which shows all registered STR properties across the city. This public map adds transparency and helps neighbors, civic clubs, and property owners stay informed.

🔗 You can view the map here:

Whether you are a homeowner, renter, or host, these new rules are designed to bring more accountability, improve quality of life, and make sure short term rentals are operating responsibly.

We encourage residents to take a few minutes to explore the map and learn more about how this ordinance impacts your neighborhood.

We Heard You and We are Taking Action

Heavy trash has been a big concern in District K, and we want you to know it is being taken seriously. After hearing directly from residents, Solid Waste Management Director Hassen committed to increasing heavy trash collection in our neighborhoods and we are already seeing progress.

Our Director of Constituent Services, Eric Goodwine, and the District K Hot Team were out in the community capturing just one example of what that work looks like in real time. Crews were actively picking up heavy trash throughout District K, with 18 crews and contractors deployed to help move things along.

This is not a one day fix. It is part of a continued effort to get ahead of the backlog and keep our streets and neighborhoods clean. We know there is still work to do, but this is an important step forward and we will keep pushing for more.

Thank you for speaking up, reporting issues, and being patient as we work through it together. When residents and the city work side by side, real progress happens.

Where Community, Culture, and Opportunity Meet

What an incredible moment for our community. Watching the doors open at the Edison Arts Foundation After School Arts Academy was more than a ribbon cutting. It was the start of something that will shape lives for years to come.

This center represents what happens when we invest with intention in our young people, in education, and in culture. It is a project rooted in purpose, creativity and opportunity.

With programming that blends fine arts, academic support, and career readiness, this new space will serve families across Houston and Fort Bend, offering a place where talent is nurtured and futures are built.

The City of Houston’s 5 million dollar commitment to this 50 million dollar project shows what it looks like when we truly believe in our neighborhoods. This is how we grow stronger together.

The doors are officially open, and this is only the beginning. Congratulations to the visionaries Troy and Charity Carter for bringing this dream to life. The future here is bright.

A Community Remembers Reggie Lewis

I had the honor of attending the funeral services for Reginald “Reggie” Lewis, President of the Ridgemont CIA, and presenting his family with a City of Houston proclamation recognizing his remarkable life of service.

The church was filled with neighbors, friends, and community leaders, which said everything you need to know about who Reggie was. He showed up for Ridgemont time and time again, whether it was through neighborhood meetings, beautification projects, advocacy, or simply making sure his community was seen and heard. And today, his community showed up for him.

Reggie never sought the spotlight. He led with heart, consistency, and quiet determination, making sure Ridgemont was always represented and respected. His impact is written into the very fabric of the neighborhood he loved so deeply.

Moments like today remind me that public service is about more than meetings and milestones. It is about standing with families in moments of loss, lifting up the stories of those who served, and making sure their legacy is honored.

Reggie lived a full and meaningful life. A life defined by care, commitment, and community.

May we all be inspired to give our time, our energy, and our love the way Reggie did.

Rest in peace, my brother. Your service will always be remembered in the City of Houston.

MLK Day Solid Waste Service Update

As we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the City of Houston is also keeping our neighborhoods running smoothly.

Here’s what residents in District K need to know about trash and recycling service during the MLK holiday:

📅 Monday, January 19, 2026 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day

  • Curbside garbage, recycling, yard waste, and heavy trash WILL be collected as normal
  • No service interruptions

However, the following City facilities will be closed for the holiday:

  • Neighborhood Depositories and Recycling Centers
  • Westpark Recycling Center
  • Environmental Service Center
  • Reuse Warehouse
  • All Solid Waste Management administrative offices

📅 Tuesday, January 20, 2026

  • All Solid Waste facilities and administrative offices reopen and resume normal operations

This means you can count on your regular pickup schedule, even on the holiday, while City drop-off locations reopen the following day.

KEEP DISTRICT K MOVING...
