Monthly news & updates

Date: Jan. 23, 2026 | Issue: January

Just because Western Nevada College’s 2026 spring semester is underway, doesn’t mean you are too late to enroll and register for classes.

Students have until Monday, Jan. 26, to add full-term classes through their myWNC accounts. When this date passes, students can add a course through Feb. 13 by submitting a late registration form with instructor approval to Admissions and Records. The late fee is $25.

If the full-term courses don’t work into your busy schedules, there are other options. WNC emphasizes flexibility with its classes, providing students who have families, work and other obligations, the opportunity to start or continue their education on their own timeline.

• Late start classes begin on March 23

• Open entry classes can be added as late as March 26

View course options on the college’s website at wnc.edu/schedule. Students who aren't yet enrolled in the college can begin the admission process at wnc.edu/starthere.

For more information on becoming a student at WNC, phone 775-445-3277. To receive academic advice, phone 775-445-3267 or book an appointment at wnc.edu/advising.

Record Number of Students

on Fall Semester Dean's List

Whether they are taking their classes in person, remotely or a combination of the two, Western Nevada College students are excelling academically.

For the recently completed Fall 2025 Semester, a record 572 students made the Dean’s List. This immense list of academic achievers significantly surpasses the 487 students who made the Dean’s List in Fall 2023.

20-Year Journey: Arturo Martell Earns Degree on His Terms

When Arturo Martell II walked across the commencement stage as a 2025 Western Nevada College graduate, he didn’t look like the typical student — and he had no interest in pretending otherwise.

Arturo’s path to an Associate of General Studies degree has been long, winding, “backwards,” as he puts it — and exactly what he needed.

For nearly 20 years, the Carson High School Class of 2004 graduate took classes at Western Nevada College, not to earn a degree, but to fuel his evolving career at Click Bond, the Carson City-based aerospace fastener manufacturer he joined in 2006. Certifications, hands-on experience and curiosity were his guiding priorities.

Working with WNC Access Program Coordinator Adrian Barrera, he learned that an Associate of General Studies required just several more classes, which he completed last spring.

Dino-Mite: New Family Friendly Study Space Is Dinosaur-Themed

Western Nevada College celebrated the opening of its second Family Friendly Study Space on Jan. 21 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe. The newly opened space, located in Joe Dini Library, features a playful dinosaur theme designed to create a welcoming and engaging environment for students with young children.

The second Family Friendly Study Space was made possible through grant funding provided by the Carson Douglas Early Childhood Advisory Council (CD ECAC). The funding originates from the Preschool Development Grant Birth through Five Initiative (PDG B-5), which was awarded to the Nevada Department of Education through the Office of Child Care, Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

WNC Presents Scholarship to Student at Carson-Douglas Game

WNC’s sponsored high school basketball game on Jan. 21 turned out to be an incredible night for Melissa Bonilla.

Bonilla received a $1,000 scholarship from WNC Foundation. President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe, WNC Foundation Executive Director and Chief Advancement Officer Niki Gladys, WNC Vice President of Finance & Administration Coral Lopez and Willy presented the scholarship to her during the Carson-Douglas boys basketball rivalry game.

In the actual game, the Tigers outlasted the Senators (75-62), who are coached by Tyler Golden, the assistant director of Academic Advising & Access at WNC. Some of Carson High's players already are part of the college, participating in WNC's Jump Start program, which allows them to take college courses while attending high school.

Willy also made his presence known, hanging out with the Senator and Tiger mascots and passing out swag along with student government leaders.

Students currently attending or planning to attend WNC can apply for a variety of scholarships with a single application at wnc.edu/scholarships. Apply by April 1.

Sammons' Interest in Painting Began in WNC Classrooms

Western Nevada College’s Fallon campus is currently showcasing a meaningful and reflective art exhibit by local artist Jaime Sammons, whose creative journey is deeply rooted in WNC’s own classrooms.

After leaving the Navy and moving to Fallon in 2000, Sammons enrolled in a watercolor class at WNC, never imagining how transformative that single course would become. In Virgil Getto Hall, Room 312, she discovered not only a passion for still life and landscape art, but also a supportive community of instructors and fellow students that shaped her artistic voice and confidence.

Her exhibit is showing through Feb. 20.

A nationally recognized author, speaker and thought leader, Dr. Fleming spoke to faculty and staff in Carson Nugget Hall on “Redefining the Goal of Education” — challenging us to rethink how success is defined in higher education.

His message was clear: Education should be organized around learners and purpose, not just courses and completion.
