Last month, I set a new personal record for “Most Dramatic Package Retrieval.” Amazon, in its infinite wisdom, delivered a box so large it blocked my front door like a fortress. Naturally, I was dressed for the occasion: leggings, sweatshirt, wild hair, and—let’s be honest, bad breath! I was in Christmas wrapping mode that day and I hadn’t even brushed my teeth yet! No shoes, no dignity, just pure determination.

With visions of porch pirates dancing in my head, I decided to rescue my precious cargo. I shoved, I heaved, I grunted. I got the box up on the railing where it soon teetered, and so did I. In a move worthy of Olympic gymnastics (minus the grace), I tumbled into the shrubbery, headfirst, like a squirrel chasing a nut. My leg found the one concrete statue that’s been lurking in our yard since the 80s. Blood gushed! I briefly considered laying there until someone came to the rescue.

But somehow, I crawled inside, hit redial on my phone that I had left on the counter and when my husband answered, I calmly announced, “You need to call 911. I am bleeding out on the kitchen floor.” My glasses were still outside, probably judging me from the bushes.

The ambulance arrived, and the EMT started chatting about the Little Boy Boone Contest that my chapter sponsors. Apparently, his son had been a contestant last year. I nodded, wondering if I knew this guy or if he was just trying to keep me calm. Psi Otes came up, because of course they did. I assumed he knew me—who doesn’t know the neighborhood’s most dramatic package-wrestler?

In the ER, my nurse who hailed from Frankfort confessed her love for cheeseballs from Beta Tau. I was too busy worrying about my leg to ask how she knew I was a Psi Ote. Maybe it was my aura of chaos.

Then came the Physician’s Assistant, ready to stitch me up. As she sewed 22 stitches into my leg, she asked if my sorority was from college as she had never heard of it before. I launched into a Psi Ote infomercial, recruiting new members even as I bled. My husband, ever the proud spouse, announced to the room that I was the Psi Iota Xi National President. I looked down and finally realized I was wearing my favorite Psi Ote sweatshirt, now accessorized with blood and evergreen. “Wear your Psi Ote shirt,” I remember saying, “they’ll ask! They always do!”

Moral of the story: If you want to be recognized everywhere—ambulance, ER, shrubbery—just wear your Psi Ote gear and attempt a daring porch rescue. Fame (and stitches) will surely follow.

PCR Time is Coming!

Your District Officers and I will begin working on your PCRs in January. I know this sounds early, but there is a lot of data entry into every chapter’s PCR before it reaches the hands of your chapter Treasurer.

New this year, we will be offering Zoom sessions for chapter Treasurers to attend. During these sessions, we will go through the data entry/reporting process showing a PCR as we enter the information, and answer questions. The goal is to have every Treasurer attend a session.

We will be posting the dates for the PCR Training sessions in the February newsletter. Stay Tuned!

Respectfully,

Mona Knight

National Treasurer

As we step into a brand-new calendar year, let us be reminded that innovation can be both practical and playful. By embracing tools like AI companions (like Copilot and ChatGPT), we open doors to fresh ways of being productive, fun, and creative—whether it’s organizing events, sparking new ideas, or even crafting whimsical poems that celebrate our Psi Iota Xi spirit. With technology lending a hand, we can focus more on enriching the lives of those around us. Happy New Year, Sisters!

A Whimsical Ode to Psi Iota Xi

In turquoise blue and old gold we shine, a yellow rose blooms—our emblem divine. With cheeseballs shared and poinsettias bright, we welcome the new year with hearts full of light.

Through flower sales and chapter meetings galore, we plan for convention and state meetings once more. Our volunteer activities sparkle with cheer, bringing art, literature, and music near.

For speech and hearing, we lend our voice, In Psi Iota Xi, we’ve made the choice: To keep enriching lives, giving to others, bound by sisterhood, like lifelong mothers.

With ornament exchange and festive delight, auctions, purse bingo, and raffles ignite. At sales booths bustling, with donations in hand, we spread joy and kindness across the land.

Through community outreach, we build and we grow, planting seeds of compassion wherever we go. Together we’re strong, with hearts in attendance, forever committed to making a difference.

***Created with the help of Microsoft Co-Pilot AI with a little prompting from me. Get excited to learn more on this topic at National Convention!

All the best,

An Omega Christmas…

The Omega Chapter, Lebanon, IN, was invited to be one of the non-profit organizations to decorate a Christmas tree at the historic Cragun House in Lebanon for their Open House Fundraiser on Sunday November 30th. Visitors voted for their favorite tree with cash. The proceeds of the fundraiser will go to the Boone County Historical Society. Although we didn’t win, we think our Victorian Christmas Tree in Psi Iota Xi colors was beautiful!

Convention Connections:

East Central, West Central, and Northwest Districts

This story began in June 2023 at National Convention in Fort Wayne, after our Saturday night party. A group of sisters were gathered at the hotel lobby bar, and they called out to me, saying they liked my presentation from earlier in the day. Two of these ladies were delegates from Fortville, and as it turns out, one of them (Crystal) knew my managing director from my IU Indianapolis office. I wrote down her contact information so I could let my director know I’d met one of her friends.

A few months later, as I was getting ready to retire from IU Indy, my colleague Kristen asked me about joining Psi Iota Xi. As it turns out the nearest chapter to her was…Fortville, where our director’s friend Crystal was a member.  And THEN came a happy surprise. During the petition process, Kristen called her mother to let her know she was joining and her mom said, “I think that was your grandmother’s sorority in Delphi.” She found a photo and passed it on to Kristen who then was able to join as a legacy.

Three women, two chapters. And a grandmother from a third chapter who is no doubt smiling down and enjoying how this all came about.

Please remember that your district officers and I are here to help you find chapters for your out-of-town friends or yourself if you are relocating. It’s always recruiting season in Psi Iota Xi.

I hope to see all of you at convention. It will be here before we know it.

Happy New Year!

Have you ever wished you could invite all Psi Ote sisters to your chapter's fundraiser or special event?

If you are planning an event or fundraiser (in person or virtual) and would like to share your invitation with Psi Ote Sisters from other chapters, let us know. The newsletter is great way to reach many sisters and hopefully increase your attendance or sales!

Electronic money transfer apps like Zeffy and Venmo plus virtual platforms like Facebook Live make it possible for even our most distant sisters to participate in another chapter's fundraisers with ease. You can support your sisters across the organization, and you might even get a few ideas for your own chapter!

Advertising in the newsletter is easy, just email JanePatton@PsiIotaXi.org and she will do the rest.
