Radon Action Month

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency's (IEMA's) monthly preparedness theme for January is Radon Action Month. According to the Ready Illinois webpage for Radon Action Month, "Radon comes from the natural breakdown of uranium and radium in the soil. This odorless, colorless, tasteless gas is found in the air that we breathe in buildings, homes, offices and if not properly mitigated can reach drastically high levels causing major health concerns. It’s estimated more than 1,100 people in Illinois develop radon-related lung cancer each year." The webpage also shares information on the K-12 poster and video contests students can participate in.

IEMA's webpage on radon includes information on testing, publications, radon guides, and even the school screening program.

Additionally, the Illinois School and Campus Safety Resource Center shares resources from the Environmental Protection Agency for educating students about radon on the Radon and Radiation in Schools page.
