On The Importance and Roles of SROs

In the article The Importance of SROs, Deputy Kip Heinle discusses the many hats that SROs wear, including educator, mentor, counselor, parent figure, and even building engineer. Deputy Heinle also addresses the proactive approach and vested interest SROs need to have, while providing examples throughout the article on his own personal experiences as an SRO. As the pandemic persists, one of the many worries is the negative effects on children. The Department of Homeland Security's Office for Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention has released the resource Mitigating Negative Impacts of Social Isolation to Prevent Violence: Information for Parents and Educators of School-Aged Children. This document discusses social isolation, its risk factors, what to watch for, tips to help mitigate it, and provides resources for educators and parents. It also discusses the potential for socially isolated students to get pulled into extremist ideology and be moved towards violence.
