From Our Pastors
“The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.”
Psalm 23:1

I think it is safe to say that Psalm 23 is the most famous psalm. Many of us know it by heart. This psalm has provided hope for countless sheep throughout the ages. King David wrote this psalm from personal experience as a young man who tended his father's flocks. David might have been tending his flocks on the same Bethlehem pastures that heard the Christmas angels. He understood sheep, their value, their needs, their weaknesses, and their ridiculous characteristics.

Sheep are stupid! Growing up, I used to raise sheep for the county fair. Sheep are needy, dirty, defenseless, and dumb animals. They are always getting lost, getting hurt, and on death's door! It takes a good shepherd to care for the flock. It takes a good shepherd who understands what the needs are and to provide for them, so they lack nothing.

David knew what it was like to be running for his life. He knew hunger, pain, fear, disappointment, and loss. Yet, as David penned this psalm, he realized that the good shepherd always provided what was needed, one day at a time. The NIV renders the term for, “I shall not want,” as, “I lack nothing." Let’s look at the Psalm again; The LORD is my shepherd, I do not lack anything. The shepherd satisfies my needs.

Like sheep dependent on a shepherd, so we are to be dependent on our Lord. He is the only need that we should have. If we as sheep have other wants/needs, it means we have different “shepherds.” The late pastor Ray Stedman wrote, “It is that simple. If emptiness, loneliness, despair, and frustration exist in our lives, then the Lord is not our shepherd… if anyone or anything else is shepherding us, we are never satisfied.”

It says in Isaiah, we all are like sheep who have gone astray, each of us turning to our ways. I know this to be true. I’m a sheep, and I need a shepherd. What type of shepherd am I following? One that knows, cares, provides, finds me when I’m lost, even lays down his life for my needs (Jesus Christ, John 10)? Or, one that always leaves me wanting?

Once we as sheep start to admit that we need a shepherd, Jesus, we begin to understand that Jesus is all we need. The LORD, Jesus, is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
