SCATTERD THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK
|
|
Dear Friends,
Are you a Believer, Christian, or Christ-follower? Believer is a very generic term. A believer might not even be a Christian. There are divergent and opposing beliefs. Jesus did not call his disciples to be mere believers, but to be followers. It is better to refer to the disciples of Christ as “Christ-followers” than Christians. To be a Christian is to be labeled as a believer. Today almost anyone can claim to be a Christian. However, to be a Christ-follower is much different. A Christ-follower is called to do more than claim to be a Christian and to follow Christ wherever He leads. A Christ-follower is called to be an agent of communion, unity, and justice which are hallmarks of the kingdom of God. Let us be Christ-followers during these challenging times. That alone will make a real difference.
Teachers and School Staff Our Parish Heroes: During this pandemic, principal Ms. Debby Rodriguez, teachers, and staff members of St. Martin of Tours School have been working very hard for the past ten months to educate our children in the changed scenario. They have been true leaven for our students and for the community by their hard work, dedication, adaptability, and creative thinking. They are our parish heroes. We commend them for their ministry. I encourage you to thank and appreciate them by sending emails, thank you cards, care notes and words of appreciation. May God bless our heroes!
Thanking you for your goodness,
Fr. Saju Joseph

January 24, 2021 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jonah 3:1-5,10 • 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 • Mark 1:14-20
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
—Mark 1:17
This is a little confusing, isn’t it? The men that Jesus called to follow him were fishers of fish. What did he mean when he said he would make them fishers of men? Jesus hoped that these men he chose would set such a beautiful example of their faith in God that it would attract other people to also want to follow Jesus. This is something that we are all called to do. If we love Jesus and try to live our lives reflecting his light, then we too will become “fishers of men.”
Prayer: Lord, help us to love you so much that all we do, say, think, and feel will radiate the love we have for you. Please allow that light to touch those we meet each day, so that they too will want to follow you.
Reflection: What is one thing Jesus’ disciples did then that we can still do today to help people know and follow Jesus?

PEACE & SOCIAL JUSTICE
To Recognize and Explore Racial Equity Within Our Community
This past year we have seen many examples of racial inequity within our own Country. Join us on a Lenten journey to see how we can work toward creating a Beloved Community where all people, no matter the color of our skin, are treated equally, fairly and with respect.
Last Fall we ran a Virtual Zoom Book Study on America’s Original Sin, Racism, White Privilege by Jim Wallis. Because of the success of that study we will be repeating it during Lent beginning on February 24th and continuing the following five Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30 PM. Please email Evelyn Ortiz at ortiz.ev22@gmail.com by Monday, February 15th to sign up for the Book Study. You will receive a Zoom meeting ID and password via email about a week before the first meeting. The book by Jim Wallis can be purchased new or used from a variety of vendors.
