Pre-IB Math 3 Pilot Course at Capuchino High School
At the January 12 Board Meeting staff from Capuchino High School shared a Spotlight on Student Learning on the school's Pre-IB Math 3 Pilot Course.
During the 2020 - 2021 school year, the math teachers at Capuchino discussed how they could create a more equitable and effective math program for their students upon returning to in-person instruction. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, Capuchino had long discussed the idea of moving toward an integrated math curriculum to be in line with the international norm.
At the Board meeting staff shared the rationale for this new math pathway along with a new set of instructional practices. Learn more by reading the full report and watching the recording of the presentation.

Mills Sports Complex Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Rescheduled for Thursday, March 16
You are invited to join Mills High School in celebrating the completion of construction of its new Sports Complex at a ribbon cutting ceremony on:

Middle College Enrollment Now Open

Is your 10th grade student interested in getting a head start on college courses and saving money on their future college expenses? Middle College is an alternative education program for 11th and 12th graders offered by the San Mateo Union High School District (SMUHSD). Middle College, located on College of San Mateo campus, allows students to earn college units while meeting their high school diploma requirements.
Student presentations took place on January 9 and January 23 during PE Class.

Society for Science Announces Top Teen Scientists in High School Competition
The Society for Science recently announced the top 300 scholars in the 2023 Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. The 300 scholars will be awarded $2,000 each and their schools will be awarded $2,000 for each enrolled scholar. Included among the scholars are San Mateo High School senior Alexis MacAvoy.
Alexis entry in the competition was titled "Biochemical Design, S. cerevisiae Genetic Modification, and Lignocellulosic Fiber and Ethanol Yield Analysis of Novel Iceplant Bioethanol for Efficient Clean Energy Production"
On January 24, 40 of the 300 scholars will be named Regeneron Science Talent Search finalists. The finalists will then compete for more than $1.8 million in awards during a week-long competition in Washington, D.C., taking place March 9-15.

Aragon Students Receive Awards at Harvard Model Congress Conference
Chaperoned by Aragon High Teachers Vicky and Jim Daniel, a group of 16 Aragon students attended the Harvard Model Congress San Francisco (HMCSF) January 13-15. HMCSF is a civic engagement conferences under the umbrella organization of Harvard Model Congress, the nation’s oldest government simulation conference run exclusively by undergraduates at Harvard College. First and foremost a teaching institution, HMC is also the most dynamic model congress simulation available to high school students.
Over the course of the conference, HMCSF 2023 offers students the unique opportunity to dive into the issues and debates facing the United States Congress today. The approach, centered around small-group learning, inspires debate, cooperation, and legislation — while also forcing students to expand their own perspectives and to understand the issues at hand in a new, more nuanced way.
322 students from 18 schools from all over the country and Honduras were present. These students made up 11 groups of House and Senate Committees as well as Special Programs.
At the closing ceremonies, each of those committees and programs recognized one outstanding delegate and one to three honorable mentions. Aragon won four of those awards:
- Leo Levitt: Best Delegate, Senate Environment and Public Works
- Enya Yuan: Best Delegate, Central Intelligence Agency
- Eesha Gupta: Honorable Mention, Presidential Cabinet
- Geneva Williams: Honorable Mention, Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions

Transition to Independence Resource Fair is February 4, 2023
The Transition to Independence Fair will be held Saturday, February 4, 2023 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at El Camino High School in South San Francisco.
The fair will offer the opportunity to learn about programs and services available to young adults with disabilities. The event brings together 40 agencies that provide higher education, job training, employment, day programs, living options, and health services to adults with disabilities.
The event will also feature multiple workshops, a variety of hands-on activities, and a free lunch!
Volunteers from the San Mateo County Commission on Disabilities, various San Mateo School school districts, the Department of Rehabilitation, Golden Gate Regional, San Mateo nonprofits, and dedicated community members put energy into making this engaging, informative, and fun resource fair each year.
