Alfa Health Plans Top Priority for Federation

The Alabama Farmers Federation is seeking to provide an affordable health coverage option for farmers and small business owners through Alfa Health Plans. Lawmakers will consider legislation during the 2025 session that could lower health care costs for farm families in their communities. Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, and others are expected to sponsor bills that would authorize the Federation to offer Alfa Health Plans for members.

Federation External Affairs Department Director Brian Hardin said Alfa Health Plans are designed to be more affordable and to help offset out-of-pocket costs.

"We have an opportunity to help Alabama's farmers and small business owners who are having to pay too much to purchase health coverage on the open market," Hardin said. "The bottom line is we're doing this to serve people. There is a need that is not being met, and we've got to do something to help encourage farmers to be able to stay on the farm."

Alfa Health Plans are proven and effective:

  • Reduce premiums by 30-60%, saving farmers, small businesses and the self-employed up to $1,500 monthly.
  • Keep family farms viable and strengthen rural economies. Do not require state or federal funding.
  • Modeled after programs in 10 other states.
  • Support rural hospitals by reducing uncompensated care.

Key features of Alfa Health Plans:

  • Only available to Alabama Farmers Federation members.
  • 85% of applicants accepted.
  • Immediate coverage for new diagnoses.
  • No rate increases or cancellations for health changes.
  • Members can join anytime.

Alfa Health Plans are a self-sustaining, member-driven solution:
