The Alabama Farmers Federation is seeking to provide an affordable health coverage option for farmers and small business owners through Alfa Health Plans. Lawmakers will consider legislation during the 2025 session that could lower health care costs for farm families in their communities. Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, and others are expected to sponsor bills that would authorize the Federation to offer Alfa Health Plans for members.
Federation External Affairs Department Director Brian Hardin said Alfa Health Plans are designed to be more affordable and to help offset out-of-pocket costs.
"We have an opportunity to help Alabama's farmers and small business owners who are having to pay too much to purchase health coverage on the open market," Hardin said. "The bottom line is we're doing this to serve people. There is a need that is not being met, and we've got to do something to help encourage farmers to be able to stay on the farm."
