The Grapevine
"I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower." John 15:1

From Pastor Jeff Foels:
Punxsutawney Phil, the noted weather forecaster and the world’s most famous groundhog, did not see his shadow this year on February 2nd. It was gray and cloudy yesterday in Pennsylvania, so as the tradition goes, not seeing his shadow means we’ll be having an early spring. It seems a little paradoxical – you’d think that sun and the accompanying shadows would be the indicator of an earlier spring, instead of the opposite. And here in Minnesota, with the sunny and warm day on Sunday, it would have been hard not to see that shadow! Perhaps we will get six more weeks of winter after all.
Light shining in the darkness is one of the key images of Advent, and in Epiphany, we celebrate the Magi who followed a star shining in the darkness. We think of light as clarifying, like a lamp on our path, or even as protecting, like a lighthouse beacon in a storm.
In the scripture passage for this coming Sunday, Jesus says to those following him: “You are the light of the world.” With such a call to us to recognize the light we share, we can be comforted that even in the midst of winter, the light still shines in the darkness.
Grace and peace,
~Jeff

VocalPoint Concerts Benefiting Express Bike Shop; Featuring Flobots
You're invited as VocalPoint presents "High Gear: Building for the road ahead,” concerts benefitting Express Bike Shop. Joining VocalPoint is alternative hip hop band Flobots, as well as students from Harding High School and Creative Arts Secondary School.
Express Bike Shop (a social enterprise of Keystone Community Services) is a St. Paul-based organization that uses engaging work readiness training and real work experiences to develop the habits and skills that young people will need to confidently compete for jobs in the future.
Flobots have been singing their smart and infectious anthems for a better world on stages throughout the United States, and around the globe, for the past decade. Weaving conscious hip hop lyrics and classical viola solos over live instrumentation, their anthems captured attention from all directions.
VocalPoint uses the power of people, art, and collaboration to tell the stories of organizations doing life-changing work. We shine a spotlight on important issues such as youth homelessness, the immigrant experience, and mental health. At the concerts, a free-will donation will be collected; 100% of these donations benefit Express Bike Shop.
Saturday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m.

Central Presbyterian Church
500 Cedar Street, Downtown St. Paul (Wheelchair-accessible)
Tickets:
$15 in advance (from a chorus member or online)
