This Weekly Update by the Illinois School and Campus Safety Program links to a new Mental Health Action Guide, shares information on upcoming standard response protocol training, provides a final opportunity to register for the Jan. 11-12th and 18-19th classes, and promotes the additional classes on Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations and Campus Threat Assessment and Management.

New Mental Health Action Guide for School and District Leaders

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released the action guide Promoting Mental Health and Well-Being in Schools: An Action Guide for School and District Leaders. According to the guide, it was "designed for school administrators in kindergarten through 12th grade schools (K-12), including principals and leaders of school-based student support teams, to identify evidence-based strategies, approaches, and practices that can positively influence students’ mental health."

Train-the-Trainer Classes on Jan. 29th & 30th

The Peoria County Regional Office of Education and the Tazewell, Woodford, and Mason Counties Regional Office of Education, funded by the Department of Homeland Security Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention Grant, are hosting the I Love U Guys Foundation for the Standard Response Protocol (family reunification) Train-the-Trainer on Monday, January 29, 2024, and Tuesday, January 30, 2024, in Peoria, IL. Both days will be an identical training to provide flexibility for districts. Participants will only need to attend 1 of the 2 days. The training, meals, drinks, and afternoon snacks will be provided for free. Registration will close on January 19th (or earlier if capacity is reached).

Upcoming Session of Campus Threat Assessment and Management January 18-19 in Harrisburg

This is the last chance to register for the Campus Threat Assessment and Management class January 18-19, 2024, in Harrisburg, IL. This two-day workshop featuring Gene Deisinger, Ph.D will help participants to better understand the dynamics of targeted violence and to develop and enhance strategies for early identification, assessment, and intervention with concerning situations. Although the training is catered towards higher ed, it is still a valuable resource on behavioral threat assessment for K-12 schools and districts.

Upcoming Session of Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations January 11-12 in Oglesby

This is the last chance to register for the Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations class on January 11-12, 2024, in Oglesby, IL. Class objectives include:

• Why it is important NOT to disregard information given to LEO or school officials.
• What the term "Leakage" means and how we can interpret the information.
• Learn free and open source online investigative tools into social networks and App generated phone numbers.
• Learn to identify and collect cyber evidence to identify suspects.
• Learn the three-step process in investigating internet crimes.
• Learn the importance of Preservation, Exigent Circumstances, and Search Warrants.
• Learn how to obtain IP's, screen names, screen captures, and email headers.
• State laws: Terrorist Threat, Falsely Making a Terrorist Threat, Swatting, and Causing a Catastrophe.
• Suspect search warrant, arrest, interrogation, and mental health evaluation.

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program is pleased to announce the class Campus Threat Assessment and Management will be held Feb. 29-March 1, 2024, in Normal, IL.
