A Note from Sherri:

      January 6, 2025

“When they had heard from the king, they set out, and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen in the east, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary, his mother, and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.”

                                                                                                                                                                       Matthew 2: 9-11

Dear Friends,

Happy Epiphany!

Today we celebrate the journey of the wisemen from the east, who followed a star to find and worship a new king. No doubt this was a long and perilous journey, and by the time they found Jesus, he was probably not a tiny baby.

Before finding Jesus, the wisemen paid a visit to King Herod, asking if he knew where the new king could be found. Herod didn’t know but asked the wisemen to report back when they found him, under the pretext that he wanted to “worship him too.” We know that Herod didn’t want to worship Jesus: he wanted to take his life so that Jesus couldn’t challenge Herod’s position. The text says Herod was frightened. Somehow he knew that this new king would change everything. Fortunately, the wisemen paid attention to a dream in which they were warned not to return to Herod.

On Facebook, retired pastor Jim Bailey notes that while both Herod and the wisemen wanted to worship Jesus, they did so in diametrically opposed ways. Herod wants something from Jesus: his life.  The wisemen want to give their treasure to Jesus. Herod wanted to take. The wisemen wanted to give. Jim notes that sometimes people will say, “I didn’t get much out of worship.” Jim says, “These people are missing the point. Worship is about giving, not taking.”

While we are blessed by seeking and finding Jesus, the relationship we have with Jesus is not transactional. It’s relational. God loved us so much, God was willing to become one of us, that we might know something of God and be in relationship with God in a way that we as humans can understand.

What lessons can we take from the wisemen? How earnestly do we seek Jesus? What gifts do we offer him? How do we prepare for worship? What are some of the signs that bring us joy on the journey of faith?

I continue to pray for you. Please pray for me.

Grace and peace,

Sherri·
